I was hoping my 4-year old would enjoy this book but it was difficult to keep her engaged. She wasn’t interested in the characters or the story. This is one situation where the movie was superior to the book!

So charming, really enjoyable read!
Side note, I only remember the first half from reading it as a kid. I'm surprised to find romance in the second half, since I was not allowed to read romance as a kid and I did read this. It probably just went over my head then, but I wonder if the copy I had literally had half the book ripped out or something

Cute story. I saved the book from when I was a girl and read it to my kids this week. The ending was a little disappointing to me.
As a child I only pretended to read this book and then probably answered some reading questions based on the movie.
At least now I can say I've actually read it.
This being a book from the 40s, I'll cut it some slack for not aging perfectly well. It's cute and occasionally funny - several times it brought a smile to my face. But its lack of plot, sense of direction, and any character development makes this one pretty forgettable immediately after its abrupt non-ending.

This was awful. Implausible isn't the right word for it as it is a talking mouse, but the whole thing was just unbearable. Charlotte's Web and The Trumpet of the Swan are two of my beloved childhood books but this one is better left forgotten.
