An excellent addition to the series! As always, one of the best narrations on audio books, too!
This book has as much as action and humor as the first, as much accessible moral and philosophical inspection as the third, and is better paced of them all. Before I even thought "hm we've spent a bit of time here" we were racing off to another situation, wholly upending my expectations.
minor spoiler
I imagine some people will have Thoughts and Feelings on the battle at Cape Town - but it fit with the series' themes of justice, vengeance, and human rights and cohered with the plot.

Another excellent dragon-adventure. I love the way Novik tackles social issues and moral dilemmas. Rather than just arguing about what the right solution is, or creating a fantasy-world where everything just works out perfectly because it has to for the plot, she works from the normal constraints of reality and has intelligent characters who have to reason out what the best action is in the current moment. Sometimes that means taking baby steps towards a cause, and other times... full scale revolution. And regardless of the decision, there are consequences (often negative ones).
Temeraire continues to be an absolutely lovable character, and many other side characters get a chance to shine in this book (especially Granby, and Catherine Harcourt).
I'm excited to start book five!

Impressive character work. Following Laurence over the course of four books, his journey has been astounding. We've seen him undergo massive growth while also repeatedly affirming and strengthening the principles that are at the core of him.

I think I like this one better than #3. While I've been trying to spread the volumes of this wonderful series out over time, the way this one ended makes me want to jump right into the next one.
