I think it was really interesting to go back and see the changes made in the world, particularly from the viewpoint of another city entirely. I enjoyed this book better than Specials and I was fairly pleased with the outcome.

Hrm. So this is the conclusion to the Uglies series...

Set a few years after the conclusion of Specials, this is an all-new story in an all-new city with an all-new protagonist... yet a lot of it feels like deja vu. Aya, the main protagonist, is an awful lot like Tally.

The pace of the novel is very brisk, but the ending is ultimately rushed, and leaves the reader unsatisfied. Everything wraps up so quickly that the emotion and the suspense is muffled. There's really nothing to hold on to by the end. It's almost slipshod. The romance presented between Aya and Frizz has no backbone, no substance. There's nothing really "romantic" about it. It merely checks a box on the check-list of YA fiction.

The whole thing just feels like an exercise in emptiness and lack of spirit. While there are lots of fun sci-fi concepts to play around with here (face rank, kicking, and hovercams, just to name a few), none of these concepts ever come together the way that they should. There's no emotion, no drama. It's just flat.

And the denouement? Completely lackluster and unexciting. There's really not that much conflict to be had here. I'd say color me disappointed, except that I really wasn't expecting much from this after Specials.

Extras takes place a few years after Specials in Japan, so it takes awhile to get the connection to the rest of the series. In this world people are valued based on the number of people who follow stories they "kick" and the number of people following them. I thought it was relevant to current events and the number of people who post outrageous things online for attention. From the beginning, my issue with this series has been that the characters are not likable. Aya is so focused on popularity that she has no concern over lying to and betraying friends. I understand she's a product of her dystopian society, but it's difficult for the reader to feel sympathetic.

Why did he write a fourth book? Book three would have been a perfect ending but no he had to continue to write. This book was pretty bad I think. The original characters are in the last quarter. That's it. What's the point? And were at a completely new city too. It doesn't make any sense. I had the hardest time trying to finish this one.

Extra's came so close to getting a 4 star from but until i read the last few chapters.

It was a let down!
It built up so much only to end really badly.

I really enjoyed this book because I love scifi but just a heads up the first three are much better

Gah, this was the WORST book of the series. Seriously, don't even waste your time. It's slow and boring and just no good.

Loved the first half to 2/3 of the book; thought it was a fascinating commentary on today's networking-site obsessed culture. Then, it went all adventure-book and strange sci-fi on me which just wasn't as good. Too bad.

My favorite of the Uglies series. Much more relevant to real life, imo. It really got me thinking. Especially with social networking so huge. It was nice that Tally had a smaller part in this book. I just don't like her very much...but I was happy with her ending.
