this was... really great. i missed this world more than i thought i did
Well this is the first BDB book that I wasn’t thrilled with and did not rate 5 stars. This one to me is just boring to be honest. There are a few things that I enjoyed, but some of the plot lines just didn’t interest me in the slightest. I’m sure I’ll still continue with the series though or at least see if the next one is better.
The Warden has done it again!
Great book! A lot of Assail whose storyline is Amazing! Not enough X'cor though. I need to wait for the next book which The X'cor and Layla book!!! Finally!!!
A lot of motherhood topics which I loved.

**2-1/2 Stars**
Unfortunately, this ranks down there with Lover Enshrined, my least favorite book of the series. This book was so putdownable for me that it took me six months to read. I found Rhage and Mary's story waaaay too long and drawn out (although the end of it was very sweet and wonderful and the reason for my 1/2 star), Assail's story meh, and anything to do with certain members of the Chosen bores me to tears for some reason (I hope that doesn't mean it's going to take me another six months to read The Chosen.)
I was thrilled at any small glimpses I got of V, Z, and Lassiter, and I'm ready to get back to a book about the members of the Brotherhood with some angsty conflict, some action (besides the big, purple Beast), and some vampire hotness!

Nice to see that Ward has finally gotten back to how she used to write!!! Still too many side stories for my taste, but was great to get majority focus on Rhage and Mary!!!!
J.R Ward is amazing I love each and every one of these books. I am giving this book 10 stars
Enjoyable as always. J.R. still has it when it comes to the BDB world, but I'm definitely not into her Bourbon Kings series. I loved Rhage and Mary as well as everyone else who made an appearance. I'm also intrigued about Jo and what part she's going to eventually play... Though I'm still not a fan of Assail my stance might be able to be changed. The one good thing he does in this book might help me make that shift. Maybe.
It's surprising how much I found myself missing the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood! Not that it's been that long since I read a book, but at the same time, it's probably been 6 months since I read the last one.
Anyway, it was great being back in this world. And great to get to delve more into Rhage and Mary. In the previous books after their own they were there, but it was focusing on others (I know, I know, duh!), so they didn't necessarily get a ton of screen time.
I loved the arc that Mary and Rhage got. It was interesting watching them struggle. They'd both acknowledged there was a distance between them but neither seemed to know why it was there. When they finally figured it out, I loved the fact that they actually talked about it. They both acknowledged that the issues wouldn't just disappear, but they both promised to start talking when the issues resurfaced. But once they acknowledged the issues, the space went away and they were just so amazingly sweet with each other. I absolutely love that Rhage acknowledges he looks good but he literally has eyes for Mary and Mary alone. I loved the way he shot those girls down.
The Bitty storyline was intriguing. It was interesting watching Mary trying to get through to her. I loved how patient she was willing to be, to let Bitty try and deal with things in her own way. She still tried to gently lead her through her grief but she didn't push. And then the way she just latched onto Rhage. Just like he is with Mary, Rhage was all over that little girl. I loved how sweet and tender he was and the way he wanted to show everything. He was cognizant of the rules of Safe Place, but he still gave Bitty the resources to get a hold of him if she thought she needed to.
The whole thing with the lessers was interesting. The Brothers clearly put a dent in things with that first fight and the Omega didn't seem to happy. Also didn't seem to waste a ton of time repopulating the ranks. I was the slightest bit disappointed that there wasn't a little more fighting, but at the same time, it probably would have cluttered up the rest of the story.
Throe is just...slimy. Whatever he's got planned, he's now out in the wind which doesn't feel like a good thing. I can't quite figure out what hand he had in Naasha's hellren's death. He as much admitted he'd worked to get himself in to take him out, but it feels like he maybe didn't quite get to it in time since he seemed to be as shocked by the will? I don't know...
And there was Xcor. He definitely didn't have a ton of screen time, but I still wanted to know. He had that brief movement period as everything was exploding with Layla and then he lost consciousness. And Layla realized he was there and did some digging. I was not expecting even the tidbits she revealed. While I will admit to still not exactly liking either one of them, the tidbits that were revealed definitely piqued my interest.
I will admit that I can't determine how I feel about the Jo thing. On the one hand, it would be kind of interesting to see more about pasts and things. On the other, does there really need to be another unknown someone thrown into everything here?

I probably would have LOVED this book, had it not been for all the new-age plugs. I know it's silly, but I found it super annoying that Ward used hashtags and referenced TV shows and used weird lingo. Maybe it's just me, but I doubt real vampires would talk like that.
