It was a nice read, but I wouldn't say I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's quick and refreshing, so if you want a light book, this is a good read!

This is one of my favorite novels of all time. This time I around I listened on tape with sam while we’re traveling. It is miraculous. The prose is gorgeous. Mr Emerson is theeee epiphanic voice. It is interesting because so many contemporary fiction writers strive toward that kind of epiphany in their writing in subtle ways and it falls flat. Do what Forster does, make it true and decisive and on the page, in dialogue.
Sam made a good point, tho, about Lucy’s character development being a bit stunted in places, and I agree with that while also believing that this story has certain magic to it that allows the characters to change. Each character’s consciousness is mitigated heavily by the narrator; hearing it on tape made me realize this more so than past rereads where I was more focused on the motif of the “view”; I can’t help but read this book in a literary critical way, but that doesn’t detract from my love of it. I’m older than I was when o first read it but I see in Lucy’s indecision and repression of her true feelings myself, which will always make me tender to this book.

I know it is a classic, and I tried to appreciate it with historical context, but overall I found it boring. Just couldn't connect with these people. I did highlight some passages and phrases which were clever, humorous, or surprisingly modern. Read it because it featured so prominently in the recently-read Checkout 19, but I still felt very lackluster about it.

I listened to the audio book and missed summer of the beginning so I got a little lost, but found my way back. It’s a short, funny commentary of Victorian ways. Sometimes you want something like that.
