This is the sort of novel that feels larger than the sum of its parts. It is short in length, but thematically weighty- making it feel an awful lot longer than, in actuality, it is.

It's a coming of age tale, following a typically messy journey towards adulthood and self actualisation. But more than that, its about the broadening of our protagonists mind. Not only through travel, and her meeting new people, but through the sudden realisation of how insular her upper middle class life really is. How narrow it is in its views of people,  and of what is considerable acceptable; and how frivolous and meaningless its rituals seem once confronted with other ways of living and thinking. Lucy is forced to question the ideals of her youth, and of the people around her- with ideas of classism and sexism playing the largest part in her growth as a character.

The the dialogue is especially beautiful in parts, with the elder Emerson's musing's on life being some of the most breathtakingly quotable. While there were certainly some plot elements that could be considered lacking, the characterisation and writing was such that I would still happily recommend this who anyone who enjoys classics with a little romance, some adventure and a few timeless ruminations on love and inequality

Audio Book read beautifully by Juliet Stevenson

Mycket blir ju underligt, i historiens grundförutsättningar.

“But, once in the open air, she paused. Some emotion—pity, terror, love, but the emotion was strong—seized her, and she was aware of autumn. Summer was ending, and the evening brought her odours of decay, the more pathetic because they were reminiscent of spring.”
