Brilliant mystery following the disappearance in the US of a 2-year-old girl, Sammy Went. 28 years later a stranger approaches Kim Leamy in Melbourne saying that he believes she is Sammy. Initially she is incredulous, but then questions arise about her background and early childhood. Her mother has died so cannot answer directly. Kim travels to the US to confront the past, in Manson Kentucky. Her apparent birth mother was in a cult.
The man who originally approached her says he is her older brother. The mystery is maintained throughout and builds to a stunning climax. Brilliantly written and exciting to read.

I know what you’re thinking, “Ugh, not another kidnapping story Katie.” Rest assured my friends this is NOT a story you’ve heard before.
You will leave feeling as satisfied as taking off a pair of high heels after a long day of work.
Kim Leamy is a teacher living in Australia when she is approached by Stuart Went. He claims she is his sister who has been missing since she was two. The DNA doesn’t lie and soon Kim is leaving behind the life she has always known to fly to Kentucky to learn the truth.
Told in now and then timelines we encounter a family slowly unraveling and a religious cult that I was dying to know more about.
This book really has it all; intrigue, family drama, and even humor at times.
The author did a nice job of dropping hints along the way so the ending adds up in the end. I really appreciate that when its well done. Well done White. Fantastic debut.
Another 2019 suspense winner for the books. 4.5 stars

What a brilliant book! The writing style is lovely and engaging and you really do get sucked in from the first page. So brilliantly written that you will never see the end coming. Really enjoyed this one and can't wait to read more from Christian White
A twisty turny mystery originally published in Australia. What would you do if someone showed up claiming that you hadn't been raised by your biological parents but had been kidnapped as a toddler? When that happens to Kim, she's thrust into the middle of a decades-old unsolved mystery involving a family torn apart, a snake-handling church, and a small Kentucky town that never knew what hit it. Hand to fans of dark, small-town psychological thrillers like Krysten Ritter's Bonfire.

Finished this in a day, I love the style of Christian White’s writing. Couldn’t put the book down and had me intrigued the whole time.
I'm always looking to try new authors, but I hate when I couldn't finish a book. This book started out well with an intriguing premise. Unfortunately, the protagonist isn't all that memorable and the mystery ran out of steam. DNF, 60%.
