The little subtitle at the top of the book says "A tale of longing - and belonging" and that's exactly what 'Of Salt and Shore' is about.

We follow Lampie, or Emilia, who's the lighthouse keeper's daughter. She's dreamy and very headstrong and must light the lighthouse lamp every night for her drunk father. One night, she can't. The consequences are severe and she finds herself working in a dilapidated mansion across town where she meets a cast of character each as unique as her.

I really liked this one! It's full of whimsy while also hitting some tough topics. Fish's father is truly despicable, and even though his past explained his behavior, it did not forgive it. I really liked that we did get that glimpse into his background, along with many of the characters. I liked that this was quite multifaceted. I loved the crew of the freak show (even though calling it that makes me uncomfortable...) and how they are really shown to be more than just their "deformity".

Lampie was such a great heroine. I liked that she was so stubborn and strong yet we did get a glimpse into her thoughts when she wanted to give up. It made her feel more like human. She's just a little girl after all. Fish was great also. I loved that even the book changed his name as he accepted himself. He put up with years of his father's treatment and now he's free.

Overall, a very lovely book! The translation was fairly well done and the writing was very nice. Recommended for middle graders who like stories about pirates and mermaids and fitting in.

Voorgelezen aan K. Heel mooi geschreven, lekkere zinnen, fijn om voor te lezen. Ook een mooi verhaal, waarbij alle mysteries langzaam samen komen.

At first, this book reminded me of another book, but I had it wrong. This was a very good and colorful story to read. Next to that, it keeps your fantasy going in your head. Great read!

This is a beautiful and magical book which I adored. It well deserves being on the Carnegie shortlist. The writing is similar to that of Hilary McKay - if you love her style you will love this too. A story of love and loss, of finding yourself and your true talents - as well as magical realism. I can’t recommend this enough.
