This was absolutely everything (I liked Love & Other Disasters just fine, but this one's infinitely better). There was happy stimming involved, and a copious amount of crying. Just the way I like my books.
I was drawn in by Alexei's introspection, the way he tried to figure out where he stood now, how he tried to make sense of the world and his place in it as a gay man. It all felt so real and close to home. I loved how his autism infused his character. The bird watching!! I love how Ben loved Alexei exactly for who he is - that scene in which Alexei draws Ben's attention by doing something most people would consider weird and Ben thought was utterly amazing, that's when I knew this was a book for me.
(One small nitpick: I thought it jarring every time Alexei used 'God' as an interjection. That did not fit with his story at all. It wasn't bad enough to change my opinion on the book as a whole, but it was a tad annoying.)

This is the second book I've read by this author and yet again am just blown away by the passion, joy, and heart she brings to these characters. Lex and Ben are so cute together and just so much of a joy to read about. Highly recommend.
Graphic: Homophobia, Sexual content, Religious bigotry
Moderate: Grief, Abandonment, Injury/Injury detail
