Plot or Character Driven: Character

When Lucifer gives Morpheus the keys to Hell it begins the best story arc of the series thus far. Gaiman flaunts his knowledge of supernatural lore as a wide variety of some of earths greatest deities and demons gather to decide who will take Hell. Gaiman does a magnificent job of humanizing these beings of lore as he has done with the Endless and this creates some of the most humorous interactions as gods from different realms and cultures meet in the Dreamworld. He also continues to humanize Morpheus the Lord of Dreams as this whole thing started because of someone Dream wronged long ago. This breaks Morpheus' stoic never changing mentality if just for the briefest of moments and we see a softer side of the Dream Lord.

Cuando creías haber entendido todo llega una nueva sorpresa. Algo de lo mejor que he leído en toda mi vida

I am getting slightly annoyed with Gaiman. The storytelling in his Sandman series is so genius, so creative, and pulls from every small, obscure corner of different mythologies and yet somehow makes sense? I get the strange feeling I am reading a graphic novel run that is in its own tier that all future endeavors into the medium will feel slightly disappointing. Damn you Neil Gaiman!

Dream goes to hell to right a wrong; gets the key to hell; and chaos ensues, basically sums it up. There is a family meeting in there too.

All jokes aside, I really like the depiction of hell as something people choose for themselves out of guilt and not something they are forced into, allowing them to leave at any time. And I really enjoyed how this applied to Lucifer as he decides he has ruled hell long enough. It's very interesting. I also liked how this concept is carried on with Charles and Rowan, when Charles posits that hell is "something you carry with you..." and not a place, while Rowan posits that it is a place(they are both right in a sense).

Besides the commentary about hell, I also like how Dream kinda sums up life and fate by saying there are paths we choose, paths that are chosen for us, and paths we do not choose, but we do what we must. I found that outlook very interesting and just true to life in general.

The cherry on top of this wonderful work was the banquet shenanigans and how we get to see the congregation of all these mythological figures. It was honestly so cool and so well done, that it just works.

Also, the fits for the family meeting were fire.

And, as per usual, the art is spectacular. It's always such a feast for the eyes.

Best of the series - Morpheus has a decision to make regarding who gains the key to hell. A cool introduction of many heroes/antiheroes/gods as they come looking to take Lucifers place.

What would you accept as a trade for a key to something you don't want? Say, if EVERYONE else wants it but you?

the epilogue of season of the mists was the first sandman comic i ever read which ofc is silly bc i had no idea what was going on when they were tying up loose ends in a story i didn’t know anything about. but reading it all the way through, i love love loved this run and getting to see that last issue again felt so satisfying. one of my favs :-)

litteral deus ex machina...
