DNF. It was interesting to see an alien used as a defamiliarizing device, but the humour did not grip me and came off as cheesy more often than not. Could not even finish it despite using it to fall asleep.

Audiobook ‘read’

Nice, quick read. Offered a unique “outsider” perspective on the human race, for sure. A bit vague on some of the extraterrestrial components; a touch too outlandish for me. But enjoyable, nonetheless.

This was a lot more thought provoking (and upsetting) then I was expecting. It was also funny.

"As well as religion, human history is full of depressing things like colonization, disease, racism, sexism, homophobia, class snobbery, environmental destruction, slavery, totalitarianism, military dictatorships, inventions of things which they had no idea how to handle (the atomic bomb, the Internet, the semicolon), the victimization of clever people, the worshipping of idiotic people, boredom, despair, periodic collapses, and catastrophes within the psychic landscape. And through it all there has always been some truly awful food." (p. 77)

I loved how unsettled the alien was by human poetry, and how quickly he became attached to the dog. The Advice for a Human chapter had some very good advice in it. (My favorite: "If you are laughing, check that you don't really want to cry. And vice versa." (p. 262))

Book discussion coming up.

(I kept thinking about My Favorite Martian as I read this. I wonder if that TV show is why Haig named his alien character Andrew Martin)
adventurous dark funny hopeful lighthearted

3,5 ster eigenlijk
