Neal Shusterman did it again!

Like in the Scythe trilogy, Shusterman (and his son Jarrod Shusterman) manage to create a world where the question of what it means to be human prevails through dystopia.

It's scary how real Shusterman makes the situations in his books. It's not far out science fiction. It's not outer space or robots ruling the world. It's all based on what is happening today. And at the center of it, characters that represent all the different facets of humanity. People don't always make the right choices, and Shusterman's heroes are never prophesied or made to be people who they're not. Each character is true to themselves, and true as a human.

I also really liked the snapshots, and how the people in those instances reappeared in surprising ways throughout the book. It shows that there's a whole world beyond that of the main characters.

I'm so glad I made the choice to actually read the books I got at independent bookstore day immediately after acquiring them. Once again, this has easily made Neal Shusterman one of my very favorite authors, and a very needed author in today's world.

DID NOT FINISH: 20%

The book is about a dystopian society where water runs out... But is it truly dystopian anymore? That is what stopped me from reading it. The creeping dread, that this would be our future. That the friends that we know now, could turn on us in an instant to survive.
I have read many dystopian books. But none of them made me feel this way.
Does that portray the writers' skill, or the severity of the issue, I do not know.
