Disturbing. I found this book even more disturbing than some of his others perhaps because it seems more real. The idea of catastrophic drought doesn't seem dystopian/futuristic/fantasy--it seems very possible/plausible. That said, it didn't seem quite as taut a read as other books and three were little things that bothered me. For instance, the kids leave their bikes behind and grab a car. Given one of them has some survivalist training, that seemed odd. They know the freeways are packed, cars run on gas, a bike seems much more versatile and it bothered me that they just left them. And the ending, just not at all believable what happens to all of the main characters.
In reading the book I did realize how much I enjoy his perspective. Unlike so many other YA books on socially relevant topics, this isn't a me me me character book (easy to do with teen characters). This book is more about the social issue and how it changes the characters--how they adapt, show their strengths and weaknesses. Refreshing.

I absolutely stumbled through this and only finished it to fulfill a prompt in my annual challenge Britt sets for me. I found the lengths to which some of the characters would go to survive at such a young age deeply unsettling, and maybe it just felt a little too real. Yet at the same time, the angst that regularly annoys the daylights out of me common in YA was very annoying, as was the frequent swearing (I’m not usually a stickler about that but in YA I find it super unnecessary). Overall a strong miss for me.

This book is super good but hits really close to home so caution. Global warming is completely terrifying and books like this are important in showing us where we're going, and how fast we're going there.
