I love the name of fictional town "Pumpkin Falls." It sounds so whimsical. While I had a hard time getting into the story, I liked the author's idea to write about a disabled veteran and his family who relocate to a small town.
A wonderful start to the Pumpkin Falls Mystery series. The main character is Truly Lovejoy. Her family has just moved to Pumpkin Falls, New Hampshire from Texas after her father is seriously injured in Afghanistan.
The Lovejoy family comes from a long line of Lovejoys who were some of the first settlers in Pumpkin Falls. Truly’s grandparents own a bookstore, and her father and eccentric aunt are going to run it.
When Truly finds a mysterious letter tucked into a book, it starts her on a scavenger hunt all around town.
This was a such a good story. I enjoyed all of the townsfolk and the setting was small town cozy.

Just from glancing the cover to how many pages, I thought I was going to dislike this book. However, I was very wrong! I love the Lovejoys! I think the author did an excellent job bringing each character to life. I enjoyed the book and the mystery!
Such a cute book. I love when books are local too! This would make for a great read aloud for third or fourth grade. Loved the beginning, the middle was okay, and the ending was cute!
A very good middle school selection. Good clean story with a touch of mystery
Heavier set up and slow to start. Didn’t realize it was middle grade when we began it.
Sweet book and message - just not my type right now, plus I’m not a fan of mysteries. Read it all the way because it was a student recommendation. :)
characters were okay. could always be developed more. plot was very unsatisfying & it definitely was not a mystery (contrary to what it might say on the cover)

This was a very sweet middle grade book and I highly recommend.
I adore the Lovejoy clan who are a family that have spent most of their lives being a part of the military and only recently are navigating what it's like to stay in one place for a longer period of time and also having their Dad around more whose military career often involved tours. Just days before their Dad is set to retire from being in the military, his convoy is hit by an IED and he loses not only a limb but his best friend.
What follows in the book is mostly from the eldest daughter's pov Truly who has to come to terms with her Dad's injury, his being withdrawn due to what he went through, navigating being at a new school in her Dad's hometown, making friends, learning how to be more comfortable with being taller than her classmates, dealing with bullying, helping out at her family's Bookstore and unraveling a mystery.
Soon Truly will realize that while there's a lot of changes, the love of her family will always be there, she finds support from friends and learns to find her own way as she grows into herself.
Trigger warnings: ptsd, death of a family friend, loss of a parent's limb, some bullying
