Lots of threads, but woven together easily: Dad loses arm in Afghanistan (not being the same temperament), moving from what would have been their first real family home in Texas, being tall, being teased, new girl in school, trying not to lose family store, and a mystery.
I like the bookstore setting, literary references, bird watching details, sense of history affecting the present day (yearbooks, old theater programs, etc.). Fun family dynamic, they really care about each other. Issue with dad is serious, but not TOO serious.
I sense a series.

The focus was more on family and social dynamics than the mystery, but it was a fun read.

4.5 stars - great middle grade novel. The mysteries were fun, but it was really the characters that grabbed me in this. I loved them. The dynamics around Truly's dad were unexpected for me, and I was captivated by the impact of his injury on the family and his growth over the course of the book.
This has been on my TBR shelves for literally years. I'm glad I finally picked this one up. I can't wait to read the next two books in the series.

good book. Not the best. Hard to understand in the middle. Liked it.
An endearing, cozy read for people who enjoy small towns, bookstores, and middle-grade family drama.
I read this book aloud to my nine-year-old son after falling in love with the cover. I mean, who can resist an owl and a snow-covered bridge? Much like the Lovejoy family in the novel, our family recently moved from Austin to a cold and snowy city in the Northeast, and we felt a kinship with Truly as she acclimates to living in a new climate and town. I only wish that the pandemic was over so we, too, could visit our local bookstore in-person and attend story hour.
This book focuses more on character development than action to drive the plot and sometimes felt a little slow going. Still, there’s enough humor, kindness, and mystery threaded throughout its pages that we’ve already put the second book in the series on hold. We “truly” can’t wait!
