This is an intense book. I was reluctant to pick it up, but I'm so glad I did. A fascist government is taking over in Ireland. The novel starts in the every day, just a hint of what's to come, and we watch helplessly as it turns into a war zone. It is so realistically portrayed and brings the reader so much closer to understanding world events. These are things that are happening/have happened in Ukraine, Darfur, Syria. I normally don't like novels written in alternative styles--there are no paragraph breaks, no quotation marks--but here it works, adding to the chaos of the time, keeping the reader off balance. Sometimes it was hard to tell who was speaking, but given that the characters often don't know who is on which side, it fit perfectly. A difficult but eerily realistic read. I'm so glad I read it.

4 stars = i loved it!

Okay… well… I wouldn’t say it was an enjoyable book to read. It’s way too… ahhhh this is very quickly what the United States is turning into and it’s not great at being escapism right now… but it was a very well written book.

I surprisingly loved the choice to not include line breaks or quotation marks, with strategically placed run ons. It very much increased the feelings of anxiety and dread that Eilish was feeling

If you like literary fiction and could handle very dark books about refugee crises and authoritarianism,  then I highly recommend, but also… go read a romantasy instead

Also… unrelated…
god i disliked Eilish for most of the book, mostly for the ways she treated Molly. Bailey was by far my favorite character. Poor baby boy.

This book is classified as dystopian, but I don't think it is. This book was very disturbing to me because it seemed all to possible in these days of American fascism. I stopped it and picked it up again several times, but it is worth finishing.
