Prophet Song

challenging dark emotional tense

In today’s current political climate, the novel often reads as a bleak prophecy of what is to come in the West’s slow slide to the right.

It took me a long time to read as I knew there was only pain and suffering on each page. Lynch’s writing style only adds to the endless horror, and though at times it was challenging to literally read, the prose rewards the reader time and time again. Another reader described it like reading a nightmare, which I can only agree with.

I believe the novel also serves to offer a glimpse, though for the privileged it may be, of the harrowing nature of fleeing war and the unending plight of refugees - a conversation which deserves light and empathy, especially within the political conversations taking place in the UK and Ireland.

I would recommend to read, but also don’t know if I would ever read it again.

Brilliantly written. Beautiful and devastating to read. Lands a little too close to home right now with the rise of the authoritarian rule in this country. But I strongly recommend.

Jesus fucking Christ.

The way this book plays with reality, absurdism and madness completely hypnotised me. I feel like I’ve been caught in this book’s headlights. I could not look away. I finished reading this in a fugue state.

Also, scarier than any horror book I’ve read, by orders of magnitude. Because I look around, I follow the news, I listen to what people are saying, and all of a sudden this book reads like a non fiction. The feelings of dread and disbelief and despair that this book activates within me are already there.

Necessary, urgent, terrifying, beautiful. I think this is one that will stay with me.
