I struggled with the writing style. And ultimately the pacing was too slow, which does it fit the topic, but I wasnt able to get into it.

I usually give a book a much greater chance before DNF but this was giving me too much anxiety, and others were waiting for it from the library. Ugh. I wish I could still drink.

interesting as a portrait of inertia, but deeply unpleasant to read as a story.

lynch’s thesis statement is this repeated/riffed line: “history is a silent record of people who could not leave.”

i have a hard time buying into it because of the complete and utter denial our protagonist stews in for 250 pages.

this was an airport purchase (there were slim pickings). but i kinda wish i had just grabbed a trashy thriller instead.

what a stunning book. there is something so quietly horrifying about this story, the swelling panic of realizing the nightmare is right at your doorstep before you even thought to leave, that lynch evokes gorgeously with his taut, deliberately unsettling prose. the writing style takes some getting used to but it created a beautiful sense of distance and yet frighteningly intimate view into the tragedy of a mother and her love for her children.
