This is a rom-com about death. I LOVED it. One of my favorite reads this year. Prepare to be devastated and healed in equal measure. This story digs into end of life, caretaking, and loss to a degree I did not expect and it was beautifully done. The heavier elements are well-balanced with romance and humor. This author is really on a roll and I can’t recommend her work enough.
on a scale of one to reading back-to-back extremely sad books about grief and queer found family, how much do i hate myself
Sí a todo. Lo habría hecho solo un pov en lugar de doble pov por cuestión de gustos personales, pero por lo demás, nada que objetar. Road trip, personajes entrañables, una relación bonita y el toque justo de drama sin caer en la lágrima fácil.

I'm not really sure how I feel about this one. Or possibly it would be more accurate to say that I know exactly how I feel about this, and that is "strange and confused".
It felt almost as if I were reading two books in parallel here.
On the one hand, this was great. It had the earnest, heartfelt, soul-bared emotions that I love in romance fiction. It had characters who were flawed but relatable. It had excellent representation of ADHD, anxiety, and demisexuality. It made me cry in the places where I was supposed to cry.
But then, there was also the shadow book that I was reading at the same time, usually behind the main book but occasionally coming into sharp focus. There, I just completely rejected the whole premise. Two women who crushed on each other in their early teens, fell out, but are still completely obsessed with each other and not over their childhood crush even into their thirties? That's horrifyingly dysfunctional. And when the switch in my brain clicked over to viewing it this way, none of the rest of the book really worked for me either.
I have no idea why this book in particular did this to me. I've read books with more ridiculous concepts where I've had no difficulty at all suspending my disbelief and buying into them entirely. I've also read books where I just couldn't get past the basic premise, for whatever reason. But this dichotomy that I feel over this one is not usual for me. So I'm left in this weird situation where I 80% think this was great and 20% think it was awful, but am going to end up rating somewhere in the middle, even though that definitely isn't how I feel about it.

Much deeper and richer than you anticipate, but an absolute joy to read. Incredibly heartfelt and funny.
Great roadtrip story as well.
The only reason that I didn’t give it 5 stars is because some of the humor/levity is gross (mostly with the dog, once with Joe…) and that always pulls me out of the story.
