Carlotta Mercedes is up for parole for the fifth time: she’s been in prison for more than twenty years, for being with her cousin when he robbed a liquor store and shot the proprietor. She doesn’t have a lot of hope, but then…she’s out. She’s on parole, she’s back in the world. And she’s going to see everyone: her mom, her grandmother, her son - and she’s going to get some real makeup. Carlotta transitioned in prison, and despite being a woman, she’s been kept in the men’s prison. And it was awful! But she’s free!
Taking place over the July 4th weekend, this is the wild ride of Carlotta’s first taste of the world in twenty years. And she’s going to drink it all up. I’m not sure what I expected from this book, but I was blown away. Hannaham has created such a vibrant, joyful character. Carlotta is brilliant, striding into the first page and commanding the room. For all of the incredibly grim details about prison and the carceral industrial system in the novel, Carlotta is an absolute delight, even when she’s talking about what happened to her. This book is unforgettable.

This book was so good! Depressing and hard, given the casual violence of prison, but it rang true to what l I know of those systems. The writing is third person but with Carlotta’s internal monologue interspersed with no quotes so you're going in and out of her accent/word choice and she's hilarious and frustrated and vulnerable and her family is bonkers.
