Serial Killer Games

Serial Killer Games is not what I expected. I’m not sure what I thought it’d be, but definitely not a quirky, irreverent, murdery romcom, full of morbid humor and true crimes vibes. Underneath all the layers, it’s a sweet love story about two deeply flawed weirdos who find each other, and make each other feel seen (complete with serial killer jokes). It was weird and offbeat, fun and lighthearted, and a little bit dark and twisted. It wasn’t my usual genre, but I still enjoyed it.

This one gave me some mixed feelings because there were so many pieces I loved, and then some that were just ok. The genre blend felt a little off because I was expecting more mystery and then it was pretty romance focused. Also, for a book under 400 pages, it felt like two really long books made into one.

There is so much preventing the two leads, Jake and Dolores, from getting together, but if they had only been more open there might have been fewer obstacles between them. Also, the little kid was pretty creepy and honestly the character who was the most sociopathic to me. She should probably be monitored and studied.

I don't want to get too into the plot because of the way it unfolds is really unique and that is how you learn about the mystery, so all I will say is this was unique and for a debut, pretty decent.

I had very different expectations for this book based on the prompt, so for the first 40% I was very confused. But once we got over the 50% mark and all the secrets were out I understood what the author wanted to do with this book and I actually really liked it. The writing style is easy to follow so it also was a quick read. I do have to come back to the first 40-50% though, the structuring was supposed to make it mysterious I get that. But god I was just confused. I also still don’t get Dolly her past? I think diving just a little deeper in her would have been better to understand the story even better.

I was expecting more of a thriller than a romance from this quirky book. I got just the opposite, though. This is basically the story of two people finding the one who "gets" you.

I enjoyed Jake and Dodi's banter but didn't really believe in their romance. I didn't feel their chemistry.

Thank you to Booksparks for the #gifted copy of this book.

struggled with this a little in the beginning. I liked the tone and the pace. And I loved the banter both between the characters and in their heads. I was just a little confused. Still not sure if I missed something or if it was supposed to be lacking details.

But part way through things became more clear and when I wasn’t feeling a little lost, I had time to enjoy not only the story but the banter I mentioned. It was dark, funny and a little bit witty.

These two might be the quirkiest characters I’ve read this year. While their lives, jobs and activities differed tremendously from myself, I found the way they were written, I could sympathize and found them relatable. It gave me thought that no matter how different you are from someone, there is definitely common ground.

Christian Leatherman and Dominque Salvacion really captured Delores and Jake and delivered on the dark humor and banter. I love when there is dual narration in a (quasi) romance. It really helps bring both characters to life.
