I read another review of this series that said the three books are almost in three separate genres - sci-fi thriller, then mystery, then survival/horror, and I think that's true. This one was pretty close in thrill/terror level to Stranger Things season two (?) when they're trying to escape from the hospital, which is to say that it was pretty close to perfect. Very Stranger Things meets Lost meets Twin Peaks.
I was really pleasantly surprised by Wayward Pines - it has great storytelling without ever being pretentious and you genuinely care about the characters despite pretty much all of them being really flawed human beings. This is a sleeper favorite for this year for sure.
