The Mountain Spirit extra broke me ahaha excuse me while I weep (that's it, that's the review)
Do I feel like I fully understood everything that went on in this book? No. I feel like if I went back and reread the whole series, I might connect more dots, but I probably won't bother. I did love the development of the relationship between Guo Changcheng and his Chu-ge, that was adorable. All of the 4 Bright Avenue crew grew on me more over the course of this book. Shen Wei fascinates me, like he's definitely kinda messed up but still weirdly lovable and so sweet at times, idk, it's complicated. 4 stars with an extra .25 star for the Mountain Spirit extra because it was so sweet and so sad and I just 🫠 That was actually my favorite part of the whole series, the main story was a bit too convoluted to hit me in the feels like that.

Hmm… Actually, I think I’d give this volume a rating a little lower than 4.0? Somewhere around 3.85, maybe.

This is definitely the weakest volume of the trilogy. Again, as I said in my review of the second volume, it’s entirely possible that I’m not familiar with Chinese mythology, so my understanding of the plot unfolding was slow, but.. I don’t know, everything felt a bit rushed? A bit jumbled, when things are revealed to you? I’m left feeling a bit confused on everything that happened, honestly.

I will say, I considered that the general sense of being all over the place/confused as a reader could’ve reflected Zhao Yunlan’s own puzzled state… Though, really, I think the execution could’ve been better.

Still, the cast of characters is thoroughly lovable, everyone at the SID has a role to play and are fairly fleshed out, really.

I wish we got to see more of Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan in their daily lives in the the extras; the pocket world short didn’t really land with me, though the one before it was really good.

Overall I loved this book. The characters are fun, I liked their relationships, and the plot was pretty interesting. This last volume felt rushed compared to the others and I don’t feel like there was a real climax to the story.

One moment there’s this big fight with the antagonist and the next POOF he’s dead. Just felt very halfhearted and not complete.

Besides that, I do like how the story wrapped up.
