I don’t have too much to say about this book, but I did enjoy it! It’s unlike any other story I’ve read and I found myself quite captivated by the end.
Ayla is a girl born to the “others” who was found and raised by the clan. The life and customs of the clan and their interactions with other clans were interesting to read about in that it really highlighted how humans may have survived and evolved while being individually weak but strong together. Ayla joining this clan pushes their boundaries throughout, but ultimately love of her chosen family and the recognition of her strengths (that come from her differences) win out…for the most part. Of course acceptance and growth are hard won and there’s constant conflict throughout.
One thing that I did find tough about this book is that given the archaic society and the gender roles that were part of that, there were parts that were tough to read. But ultimately I enjoyed the book and the ending made me very keen to read the next one.

4.5 stars. I loved the description of the culture, customs, food, and survival methods of the characters. I loved Ayla and had a soft spot for Creb and Brun too. The characters were well rounded and in depth. The plot was riveting and moved at a great pace. The ending left me speechless. I learned so much about this portion of history that I have little knowledge about. The admiration I was left with for Ayla is great. However, the reason I didn't give it 5 stars was the seeing into the future part. This portion of sci-fi jarred against what I consider a great historical fiction novel and therefore it ended up just out of top marks.
didn't finish the book. With the lack of reading time I have now, I'm not forcing feeding books. It's forever going to stay in the incomplete pile.
Very detailed writing such as plants, animals and internal character thought dialog. If you don't like this type of writing, this isn't for you.
I love when books are so well written they have the power to take you to another world. The Clan of the Cave Bear took to me to a time when people lived primitively and relied on nature to survive. It's such a sharp juxtaposition with today's world. I think everyone should read this book as a humble reminder of what our ancestors used to do just to make it.
Auel has a great descriptive language to make you feel as if you are there, around the hearth, eating their food and drinking their tea. The coming of age story is riveting and delightful.
Overall, a great read to escape our current harsh reality.
