I think this book left a lot to be desired. The descriptions were a little lack luster for me, with it being a horror it could have been more grotesque and dark, so I was a little disappointed. My expectations were high because of the title, cover and synopsis but it just didn’t live up to that.

There were a few bits that could have been elaborated on. Especially the main character’s gift which is mentioned in the synopsis and is what initially drew me in, but he never uses it. Also, the secret that the nana is keeping is never revealed. The characters are adamant on finding out what it is, but we never do. Perhaps it’s a set up for another book? Especially with the ending being such a cliffhanger? I hope so, just so I can find more out.

Also, there is one bit that irked me in the book. The psychic says that she needs cast a protection spell on all the characters, but one is absent so she says she’ll do his when he returns. But when she finishes on the others, she demands to leave only for the third guy to return moments later. But even then she doesn’t do the spell, it isnt even mentioned. It’s not critical to the point, just kind of annoying that this was missed.

This is definitely a quick read. I wasn’t locked into the story, but it was entertaining enough. If you’re going into this book looking for some deeper commentary on theme, there’s not one. Feels very Reddit-esque in some ways.
This book touches on some dark concepts but I don’t know that it conceptualized them well.
I think I liked the premise of the book more than I liked the book itself. We’re told that Felix can see spirits, but that’s never really explored. The whole bit with Nonna seems extraneous and it could have either been left out entirely or expanded on more to make that plot line more applicable and appropriate to the story.

For me this was an ok book. A quick read with a standard possession story, but not much that really jumped out as unique or memorable.

It was actually a little scary for me at first. A genuine surprise because I've built up such a tolerance, I think.

As the story unfolds, it just becomes heartbreaking.

Overall, I enjoyed it.
