This is immediately my favorite book of January, and I wouldn't be surprised if it makes my top 10 of the year. I was not expecting the emotional toll and I need to read the sequels immediately. Tamsyn Muir is now an auto-buy author for me.

A note on diversity: the characters in Gideon the Ninth are vastly different in terms of personality and motivations, but as far as I am aware, they are all white.

It’s early into the year, but I think this might be one of my favorite reads of 2023. It took a second for me to fully get into the world of Gideon the Ninth, partially because I think it was lacking some explicit world building, but pretty soon I was absolutely flying through pages.

Gideon’s perspective is hilarious (I’m a BIG fan of snarky narrators), and paired with Harrowhark’s serious and sometimes downright dreary disposition, it makes for an entertaining pair. I’ve marked so many pages for Gideon’s one-liners alone.
“he gave her turbo cancer” nearly made me scream

If you’re thinking about reading this book, go ahead and pick it up. You won’t regret it.

I really enjoyed this and it has definitely stuck in my mind after finishing. It kinda threw you into the deep end and didn’t do any explaining at the beginning, so I spent the first Act confused. But once I had a grasp on the world and characters wow… I was totally wrapped up in this book and couldn’t put it down! The voice of the main character was really funny and enjoyable to read, which lightened up all the cool necromancer/mystery plot. Definitely recommend reading! I will be reading Harrow as soon as my schedule allows lol
