This book was a struggle to get through. More of dealing with parental issues than a rom com type of book.
Although it wasn't a wow romance, it was a fluffy and cute read. One thing I really enjoyed about the story is how the resident fought to make sure pregnant people had the resources they needed, which is something that needs to be done all the time in real life.
I recieved a copy of the book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review of my own thoughts and opinions

I loathe these kinds of protagonists.
The nonstop whining.
The writing…dear God, why?

This could be a petty rating, but I cannot give this 3 stars when it’s truly a 2.5 rating.
For one, where was the meet cute, nothing about that meeting was cute or charming because Sam was annoyingly rude from jump. She was insecure, ill equipped and irrational in her assumptions. Not only that, she held a grudge about what exactly… That isn’t my definition of a meet cute.
I was interested in the actual research project but we didn’t get a lot of information about the actual progress just a lot of overcompensating, overpromising and failing. We jumped around so much and highlighted things that truly didn’t matter like her inner monologue over the actual findings of the study. That patient’s health condition didn’t make sense to me with the way I understood the program to run. But Sam literally paid little attention to other details that I wouldn’t be surprised if she missed indicators in previous appointments.
I also didn’t know I’d fallen victim to another parental guilt story which made another petulant grown ass adult as the FMC. I really need this trope to be include in trigger warnings from now on. Otherwise authors will keep getting these low as reviews from me. The “come to Jesus moment” with her mother was lackluster to say the least.
The MMC Grant deserved so much more respect and grace from the FMC. Honestly I almost DNF’d three times because of her unwarranted behavior and snarky remarks. I find it hard to understand a forever student (let’s be real doctors are in school for so disgustingly long it’s a well deserved title) consistently finding issue with her legit teachers (i.e. Senior Fellow and Attending) trying to teach her. Yes, she projected her disjointed relationship with her mother on them but how TF did you get this far in your career with that fucking disposition. Did they try to curb some of her ambition, yes but was it in an effort to help her realize the gravity of her plans, ABSOLUTELY. She applied for grants without any plans in place or personnel like come on. I think my background made this one either a clear hit or miss and it missed badly.
Lastly, the chapters just jumped in and out of scenes, sometimes what felt like mid thought. I’m worried that it wasn’t just this story but an incompatibility with this author’s storytelling. Might need to rethink her other books on my TBR list.

The set up was great, but honestly everything felt predictable. She was overwhelming herself with work and helping out friends and her family, on top of her very demanding job in the hospital. It didn't seem realistic, first of all, and second, I didn't want to read the "it all blows up in her face" storyline where she would inevitably have deep conversations with everyone about how she overcommitted herself only to disappoint everyone and herself. I only really cared about the love story, but it was going too slowly for my interest.

The book is more about the FMC’s relationship with her fucking awful mom. The FMC was also just a huge doormat.
