Two stars for rep and an interesting premise, but it’s dragged down by everything else.

Fun read. I have a favorite sister, and it’s not close.
Not that  I’m great at predicting plot twists, but I totally didn’t see the twist of him becoming King coming! I loved it though.
Hope my library hold on Cursebound is short, excited to keep going with this series.

The writing style was a little simplistic, the characters very YA even though they are mid-twenties. The magic system of the world wasn't really explained until 50% through the book and even then it was basically "just there and they used it." There are romantic interests but the chemistry really wasn't there. The reasoning for the war was explained but not well. Overall it was an ok story, but I wouldn't read it again, I'm glad I didn't buy it (library), and probably won't finish the series.

Faebound is a progressive fantasy that features a diverse and inclusive cast of characters. Initially, I was interested in Faebound because it has a strong female lead character but I stayed for the complex world-building and will-they, won't-they romance.

In Faebound we follow Yeeran, a disgraced warrior exiled out of the elven lands for her catastrophic last battle. Not content with the chieftain's decision to send Yeeran away, Lettle leaves her community to find her sister. They become involved in the world of the Fae, thought long dead by the world.

Both Yeeran and Lettle are strong characters. Yeeran is driven by purpose, she's an interesting character and I found myself liking her more and more as time went on. Her sister is driven by a love and loyalty to Yeeran that makes her highly empathetic. Going back and forth between the two girl's points of view made for a more engaging story that was already compelling

That all being said, there were times when the romance felt a bit forced. For me, there was a lack of chemistry in both romances. Part one is also a little slow to start but once things get going it's pretty fast-paced.

Overall I think this was a very satisfying novel with a lot of story beats that are carefully laid out that pay off big in the end. I'd like to see where the story goes from here and will be looking forward to the next book. If you're unsure of what fantasy novel to pick up this one is well worth reading.

lycaenide's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 27%

Firstly, I loved the diversity and setting. I really wanted to love this but at 25%, I know I'm on the cusp of it picking up but I just don't care. The characters read far younger than they are and I'm just not invested in the plot.

I really liked this book! The representation of non-stright white people was refreshing! Every single character was either BIPOC, LGBT, non binary or a mix of all 3. Elves, Fae, magic and mystical creatures, What's not to love?

Also, the using a drum as a weapon kinda broke my brain at first but it was a really cool twist on the normal use of bows or swords in most fantasy stories.
