I liked the premise, but the momentum petered out about midway into the book. Also the romances felt forced and side characters that ended up being important plot drivers were very one dimensional. I don’t think I’ll read the second book.

I've been trying to read this for 3 weeks and I can't force myself to do it anymore. This book could've and should've been so good but instead it was boring, slowly paced, and overall poorly exaplained.
Characters: Yeeran was fine as a fmc, but having the alternate POV be her annoying ass sister Lettle was a choice. It's even worse considering they're both supposed to be well into adulthood, but both of them act like idiots. The entire vibe of their characters was giving YA.
Yeeran is a seasoned army veteran who's finally reached the status of colonel and her FIRST DAY on the job she disobeys a direct order and gets hundreds of people killed? That doesn't make sense! She's then exiled for this and you're supposed to feel bad for her even though she did the dumbest thing you can do in a position of power in the military....
Lettle is a seer who can't even understand her own prophecies. Pointless! She's also eternally mad for reasons that even she can't explain which does nothing for me if you want me to like your characters.
Plot: A lot of things happen to the main characters but you only know because you're told. They don't actually discover any of these things themselves which is no good to me in a fantasy. They also both sort of give "too stupid to function" at times. They learn things about the fae and every single time they respond with: "i didnt know that" WE KNOW. But instead of actively choosing to learn they just....accept they didnt know thing A and move on to thing B. rinse repeat. Like, Yeeran literally kills the prince of the fae and gets off by saying "I didn't know". What do you know? It's even stranger when you consider that Yeeran probably should know a lot of these things considering she's a COLONEL IN THE ELF ARMY and is in an active relationship with the head of her military.....
The plot should be more interesting but the most interesting parts are only half explained. The elfs are separated into tribes based on phases of the moon but only 2 of the tribes are fighting. Where are the other 2? Why are they fighting on the same piece of land? They're fighting over this resource that helps crops grow but they live in direct sunlight and have plenty of water. Why do they need magic to grow crops? It goes on like this with questions ...
Magic: I didn't get it. Elves have to use Obeah skin on drums to produce magic, fine. Fae, are inherently magic but can only USE the magic when they're bound to an Obeah which doesn't happen to everyone? But they live in a magical society...in which you can only speak the language if you're bonded?? Yeeran becomes bonded and suddenly she can do both Elf AND Fae magic but she never questions it at the point in which I stopped. She's just like "wow cool"? Lettle's prophecy magic again makes no sense and even she doesn't understand it so I certainly didn't need to care.
Romance: None of the couples had chemistry. Yeeran is so clearly supposed to get with Fae princess' who's name I can't remember but they way they interact doesn't really make me believe that either of them could like each other. By halfway into a book, if one of the main points is the romance, you'd think there would be a clear vibe between them. Instead, this book mainly focuses on the romance between Lettle/Rayan (soldier who left the army when Yeeran was exiled) but Lettle is so mean to him that idk why he's even into her. Another case of negative chemistry.
I wanted to like this so badly and I'm still willing to give her other series a chance considering it's way higher regarded but omg this was boring af!

The world-building was very nicely done and because of that the book hooked me in. I'm not sure I buy the "romantasy" tag, because the romantic plot was truly only a side thing. Which, in my case, was extremely positive because I enjoy a good fantasy book. But the romantic plot was , in my opinion, badly done. We start from enemies and transition weirdly to lovers, with no in-between stage. It didn't make the fantasy plot less enjoyable, but if one was to read this only because of the romantasy tag I guess they'd be disappointed.

Didn't enjoy the writing style, the dialogue didn't feel natural. The MC felt unlikeable so far.
I had a really good time with this book. After seeing mixed reviews I was quite anxious to read it. But I’m happy I did.
I enjoyed that there were elves and fae and it was enjoyable to see how different they both were! I liked how the characters were developed and the development between them. I also really enjoyed the plot! The plot was so intriguing and if had me enticed the whole time whilst reading it. Especially after the 60% mark I was just hooked and didn’t want to put it down!
I love Yeeran, she’s very fierce and I just loved her. I definitely felt like I could relate to Lettle more, she comes across as quite stubborn and she tells you how it is very bluntly which is just fantastic. I wasn’t sure about Lettle at first but she’s definitely grew on me. I also like Rayan, he was a great character. Furi I didn’t like at first at all but by the end I actually really ended up liking her a lot.
I did see parts of the ending coming but some of them I didn’t and I was shook! That was a fantastic ending to a book!
