Cool concept and world building, but poor execution…

So mid it was actually frustrating.

Not a bad book by any means but didn’t really draw me in. I felt a lot of the worldbuilding was either understated (needed more detail) or really heavy-handed that it didn’t seem natural. I thought the romance moved too quickly, especially for Furi and Yeeran. I thought Yeeran should have done much more to signify her actually being over Salawa, otherwise it seemed a little out of character for her to move on. It was also very predictable, none of the plot twists felt shocking to me even though they were clearly shocking to the characters, I think the foreshadowing was a bit heavy-handed. It wasn’t a bad book and some of the magic stuff was interesting (although very His Dark Materials with the Obeah lol) but it just wasn’t my thing.

This book is so close to being so good, but it just falls a bit short. I like the sister relationship this book revolves around, and the world building and magic system are interesting. The other relationships though, especially the romantic ones, feel rushed and forced to me.

I enjoyed the story but did find some aspects quite predictable. Will be interesting to see where it goes in the next book.

A world create by three gods; one created humans, one created Elves and one created Fae. Until one day only Elves were left… or so they thought. In this book we follow two sisters; one a warrior, one a seer as they enter into a world forgotten by all and unlock secrets of the past.

I throughly enjoyed this book; I cannot lie it did take me a good while to get into it. The writing style is descriptive meaning the world building is excellent; however and I cannot put my finger on what it is but it can feel; the only word I can think of is formal. And after talking about it with my partner, it feels as though the style of writing could want to be reflective of the worlds we are in; very formal with lots of traditions that are upheld in both the Fae world and the Elven world.

The plot is fascinating, with lots of twists and turns and many unexpected surprises. It is rich and there is a strong web of characters and history that is spun incredibly well. We are never given all the information, however our writer gives clues in the form of our seer sister and it is brilliant trying to figure out what her visions are trying to show.

The romances that take place are most definitely a sub-plot and I loved that we had sapphic and queer love represented in this book.

I am very much looking forward to reading Cursebound.

I was bored at first and considered dropping it but then around page 70 something flipped and I loved it
