Philomena McCarthy returns for a second novel and I loved it. Michael Robotham writes a great thriller. Suspenseful and action packed from the first to last page.  I love the confict of Philomena trying to stay on the straight and narrow, pursuing a career in police work while maintaining a relationship with her mob boss father.  Story was well written and keeps you on the edge of your seat.  I highly recommend reading When You Were Mine first to get introduced to the characters, but The White Crow does work as a stand alone as well.

Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for an opportunity to read and review honestly an advanced digital copy.

🇬🇧 Set in London, Philomena “Phil” McCarthy is a cop, aspiring detective, who finds herself in the middle of a robbery/murder/home invasion.

To add drama, Phil’s father and uncles are the McCarthy brothers: the mob boss family, which leads to some interesting “conflicts of interest”. 😝

This definitely hit the spot as a top tier police procedural with the right amount of suspense and twists to keep me turning the pages until the final reveals.

I’ll note that having not realized there was a “first” book in the series, I didn’t feel lost or that I had missed anything starting right here.

🎧 Katy Sobey on audio was easy listening including British and other European accents (Bulgarian, Irish), however I enjoyed the print edition just as much.

TW: Sexual Assault, Fire

As the daughter of a London crime boss, Police Constable Philomena McCarthy walks a thin blue line keeping the two sides of her complicated life apart. On patrol one night she discovers a child in pyjamas and a deadly home invasion, as three miles away a prominent jeweller is found strapped to an explosive in his ransacked store. All the evidence points to Phil's father as the mastermind. Phil's two worlds are colliding. Who can she trust - the badge or her own blood?

Whoa, what an explosive continuation of Phil’s story! I had thought the first book was amazing, but this one managed to surpass it. By the end of book one, I had wished to see more of the McCarthy’s and this sequel didn’t disappoint. It immediately plunged into the heart of Phil’s blood family and pitted her against her law enforcement ‘family’.

I loved the way Robotham once again presented Phil’s contrasting worlds. She had to maintain the delicate balance of her loyalty to both sides, and this story really did it with utmost respect to her character’s principles and growth. I also really enjoyed Phil’s dynamics with Henry and Daisy.

The mystery itself was fully engaging. The villains were totally believable and the stakes were realistically high. The last quarter of the book kept me on the edge and made me forget to breathe. It was action-packed, high adrenaline and suspenseful. I’m so glad Robotham decided he wasn’t done with the McCarthy’s after one book (which was supposed to be a standalone).

If you haven’t checked out this series, please do yourself a favour and do it!

Thank you to Michael Robotham and Simon and Schuster Canada for providing me with a copy of The White Crow for me to read and review. The White Crow is the second book in the Philomena McCarthy series and it does not disappoint! It grips you right from the start with a story filled with mystery, suspense, and action. For all the puzzle pieces and unique characters to fit together the way they do is masterful storytelling. Robotham wrote The White Crow as such a compelling, mysterious set of situations that I was kept on the edge of my seat, not wanting to put the book down trying to see how they would all fit together. Definitely highly recommend this read!
