I flew right through this book. To describe in short: a Black, queer, witchy murder mystery. It was easy to read, the characters were lovely, and if more stories were told about this group or within this universe, I would immediately pick it up.

I was really excited to read this book, so I'm bummed to give it only three stars.
I think the idea was there, and it could have been great, but the pacing seemed really off. It felt rushed and yet the story moved so slowly. It seemed incomplete, like it needed some good fleshing out. The 'who done it' aspect was there, but only barely, as it was pretty obvious from the get how it would conclude, at least to me. The emotions of each character seemed shallowly written, which made it hard to connect with them.
All in all, I think this author had a great idea, but it just wasn't executed the right way to make it a great book.
One positive note on this one, and the reason it got three stars instead of two: The magic system and set up with the different houses was written and explained really well. That aspect kept me interested and reading. It helped me to not DNF this one.

Our main character, Zora, is a necromancer. Her feelings and history around this are very complicated. She ends up meeting a witch, Birdie, who introduces her to an all Black magical community. Zora has never been part of a community so it is both a blessing and a challenge as there are different personalities and abilities to contend with. Zora tries to solve a murder within the community while also trying to decide if she wants to stay as a part of this community. I love the queer representation in this book.

The synopsis of this book had me hooked! I loved getting lost in this world as all aspects are very interesting! We have Zora who is a necromancer and is now living in Savannah. She meets another witch and this is where Zora is introduced to a community that she was missing. The burlesque club was a favorite aspect of mine! The author described these scenes amazingly! Now the murder mystery of this is what I think needs some better planning. Some parts did not make much sense and others felt lacking and short. This is also how I felt about Zora’s past. There was so much more I wish the author could have given us in order to fully understand all of Zora and her newfound community. I definitely loved the found family trope in this. This is perfect if you’re looking for a quick short read!
