I listened to this in one day while having a migraine. It was very good! I'll probably not remember a whole lot of it in a few weeks, but that just means I can reread it at a later date and not know every detail :P

It's a YA book, but doesn't feel all that YA, probably due to the serious setting.

Me and my friend have both had this book on our shelves for ages and now we read it together!
It was a bit slow in the beginning and I didn’t get that far in it before putting it down. So I wasn’t super interested in the beginning.
But, as I was reading I got so hooked, I read like 2/3 of the book in like 36 hours (including sleeping and working). I was stuck, but there were some parts that I didn’t enjoy that much or feel weird about.
Them finding the Fosters and Jamie thinking about how he is in love, them kissing when they’ve been captured by propel who don’t like queer people and also the end meh
But overall it was a nice read, I was not ready for the more intense and “scary” parts of it!

It’s a little disjointed, random, and upsetting. The apocalypse came, but instead of zombies, people just turn on each other and kill one another instead of trying to work together and live. I kind of hated the world of this book, and how miserable and hopeless it was.

The only part I actually had a good time with was the budding romance between Jamie and Andrew. Except for one thing. I know sexuality can be a fluid thing - but I really don’t enjoy books where a character is stated to be straight and then suddenly is doing some really homosexual stuff. I find it really uncomfy. I would have preferred it if Jaimie just admitted he was bi.

The romance was sweet, though.

Also - I’m so glad they helped Cara. A place like the Fort Caroline sounds like my actual nightmare, and I wanted them to go back and save all the women there, who were probably being used for broodmares and kept against their will. That plot was actually horrific.  I know they had to leave - but they should have told the other settlement at the end that there was a fucked up settlement to the north, and some of the things that were happening there. I’m glad Cara got out,  but I’m sure there were so many others in that place who regret coming to live there, just like she did.

This was a beautiful, quick book to read.

The characterization of Andrew and Jamison is amazing, and Brown works well to blend together both a broken world, hope for a future yet unseen, and the dangers that can be rather inherent in a world that was destroyed.

This book made me laugh, made me cry, made me ponder just what kind of a world we live in, and whether or not human nature would go the way no one would like it to go.
