I felt like I was back in my Sookie Stackhouse bag with this one! Some of the writing definitely felt a little bit dated but I appreciate the world and characters that Patricia is trying to build in this series debut. I'm excited to see where it goes from here and I'll definitely keep reading. The actual mystery that was afoot here wasn't particularly interesting (maybe slightly too convoluted, there are WAY too many characters to remember) but the character dynamics was what really sold it for me to come back for Book 2.

3.5ish - I mostly enjoyed this as a quick fun read. My main frustration was with the way the main character was supposed to be unaware of certain things, but in first-person narration, that meant she had to describe them happening but then be oddly dumb about what they meant. Still, that only happened occasionally, and primarily to do with just two personal relationships, so the rest of the story didn't suffer. I liked the world-building. The convention of having a protagonist who's been a part of the otherworldly culture but is now an outsider is pretty useful for getting around awkward exposition. This book is already blending with "Rosemary and Rue" for me because of that particular similarity. But like that series, I'd read more in this one.

It was ok, but did not engage me enough to want to read the rest of the books in the series.

Despite the cover, this was actually a pretty good book. Mercy is an interesting character and there was a lot of interesting things going in. It did drag in the middle a bit but a good plot twist made up for that.
