“Hard truths can be dealt with, triumphed over, but lies will destroy your soul.”

My reading tastes can sometimes be capricious. I discovered Mercy Thompson back in 2008 and devoured 4 of her books, and then forgot all about it. Now, with the publication of the sixth Alpha and Omega books, which I loved, I’ve finally decided to catch up on Mercy :O)

This first instalment sets the scene and the players, including werewolves (naturally), vampires (one favourite that loves Scooby-Doo), the fae (they always creep me out) and our titular half Native-American mechanic who can shapeshift into coyote form. As you can imagine, between all these explosive parties, Trouble keeps coming up and Mercy seems to be always in the middle.

Such a good Paranormal urban fantasy! I am not in love with the characters but I do like them. I like the story and plot. The plot was interesting and the pace was so freaken good. The length is perfect. This just shows that you can still write a good story without it needless being long af. I even enjoy the romance aspect. It kinda feels like a love triangle/square but I have zero complaints and this is coming from the queen of 'I strongly dislike reverse-harem/love triangles, etc...'. I don't know if Patricia Briggs figure a way to lace drugs in her writing but everything hits. I am obsessed and will be reading this series as much as I can.

I recommend this to anyone who wants to get into urban paranormal fantasy. The world is not to complicated and it's easy to understand. Has the classic Vampires and Werewolves (+ fae and other creatures). The length is amazing for people who are in a slump like me.

Over ten years after I first read it, I revisited the Mercy Thompson series while I was miserably sick over Thanksgiving weekend. I wanted something paranormal, the ebook was on sale on the nook app, and I figured what the hell.

And I loved it. It was great. Mercy was great, I got invested in the characters, I loved Zee, and I don't know what I was thinking last time. This book was delightful. I'm pretty sure that's not just the cold meds talking.

I wish I would have picked this book up first. I like how it gave a back ground on how they turn and that there are wolves and coyotes and how they work. I love her name and shes a pretty cool character. I'm not into cars but I think that's pretty cool we have a chara working on them. It was kinda freaky when she almost got ate. It seems that it would suck to be a coyote because they are the prey. I cant wait to continue and see what happens in her life.

Okay, so the cover made me avoid this until I saw all the good reviews. I know you're not supposed to judge a book by it's cover, but when was the last time you picked up a book with a man's bare chest and thought: hmmm, I wonder if this will be a good mystery?

However, the reviews are right. The main character, Mercy, is snarky, smart, and honest about her strengths and weaknesses. Seeing the world from her perspective is refreshing and addictive. The author never dumbs her down during the romantic interludes and keeps the pace of the plot hopping from start to finish.

This book is a great read.

This has not aged well--especially he use by a white author of a character who is a part Native American skin walker. But I also have to question why the author chose to make the gender politics of werewolves so regressive, even if she has the main character regularly comment on that problem.

This book is still as good as the first time I read it when it first came out
