One of a number of novels I've now read in which a female protagonist has an affiliation with things that go bump in the night, coupled with powers that are different from her friends. In this one, our heroine's friends are mostly werewolves. There's a strong emphasis on wolf pack "culture"--i.e. pecking order, alpha dogs. Like most books of its ilk, it's a fun quick read. It compares decently to C.E. Murphy and Charlaine Harris.

This is a small town, paranormal fantasy with all sorts of supernatural people. Mercy is a mechanic who can also change forms to a coyote. She's called upon to help with a mystery in town and things go from there. Mercy as a character was great; she's a badass character, I love her. Honestly I'd read the second book just for her to be honest.
The mystery/adventure was also pretty fun, it reminded me a little bit of the Sookie Stackhouse (Southern Vampire Mysteries) books. Pacing was fast and keeps you engaged. There's also a variety of characters and I thought they felt fairly realistic, I'm sure the future books built up more on them.
I really enjoyed finally reading this (after hearing about this book for years now). This book hit my mood reader at the right moment and was a really fun read.

My favorite of the series! I was able to get it signed at the Emerald City Comic Con.
I came to this book after reading Cry Wolf and I love all the characters! Mercy is such a badass but she still has flaws.

I think this review is going to be shorter, but that is okay. My husband recommended Moon Called to me as the Mercy Thompson series is his all-time favorite. I have tried twice before to read this book but both times, I didn’t seem to have the attention span for it. I joined a reading challenge this year and one of the prompts was “Give it another chance” and there was no doubt in my mind which book I would pick. Moon Called, in the most basic description, is a supernatural detective book (at least that is how it feels). It’s about a young woman named Mercy Thompson who is a shifter and a mechanic who bought her shop from her former boss, who is a powerful fae. Her next-door neighbor, a very wealthy, attractive, and powerful man, is the alpha of the local werewolf pack and her best friend is a Scooby-Doo obsessed vampire. She insists on involving herself in werewolf politics and problems even though she is not a part of the pack, and honestly... I love her for it.
The cast of characters might just be my favorite to date and it makes it hard to pin-point a character that is above all others in my heart: Ben is misunderstood and deserves better, Warren is a Texan sweetie-pie, Stefan is my beautiful vampire boy, Mercy is best girl, and Adam is... well... yummy. Also, there is no shortage of diversity either. Native American, African American, Asian, Russian, German, Italian... There are so many races other than Caucasians represented and it makes me so happy. You even get gay characters who don’t exist solely as comedic relief! I genuinely love what Patricia Briggs did.
The story is an Urban Fantasy so the setting is in the modern-day real world, and having grown up in Washington state myself, I was thrilled to realize I knew a lot of the place Mercy referenced. I have family in Pasco that I used to visit from time to time, so the story felt like going home.
Now, for me, I felt like the story was a bit slow to start but genuinely that may just be my brain trying to come up with a complaint. I enjoy the writing style of the book, the plot was fantastic, the only complaints that I have at all are the initial pacing and the fact they try to avoid cursing. That just feels odd to me, especially when it comes to adult fiction. I am trying to rush through my next book so I can start Blood Bound.
