This was decent and fun. The FMC Mercy is a walker, a coyote shifter. She runs with a pack of werewolves, and the Alpha gets attacked and his daughter taken. Mercy goes on a quest to find them and meets all kinds of paranormal creatures along the way.

The first book in this series was good though I originally disliked that some of the characters seem to randomly jump into the plot with all this important background connection to the main character without much introduction.
I. Shipped. Them. Hard. I shouldn't have. That wasn't the point of this book, but I soooooo did.
Mercy is a fucking badass werecoyote thing and I love her and that is that so there. I thought I wouldn't like this because werewolves and there were vampires, but it wasn't what I thought at all. The world that Briggs creates is interesting and forces you to keep turning page after page. I was a bit shocked that a death would come so quick to the story, but it did help with the plot. I was just taken aback.
Loved Zee, her gremlin old boss. I'm also madly in love with Warren, a gay werewolf (um, yes please). Stefan is a vampire, and dare I say it, but I also really like him. I hope we see more of him in her life. He was trustworthy despite being a vampire. I'm working on warming up to Sam, but it's not really there. Oh... and then there is Adam. ::shudders:: Adam is the alpha of his pack, so there you have it. He won. I lasted all of a page.
Good shit. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

On the whole I really enjoyed this book. It's a smooth, engaging read, and having a skinwalker as the main character is an interesting vantage point. Her vision of werewolf culture is a bit hypermasculine for my taste, but it doesn't overpower my ability to like the characters and story, at least not here. I'm also a little worried about how often Mercy feels compelled to remind us that women don't like or trust her.

i can see where a lot of people enjoy this! including my wonderful friend elise, who recommended it! however, this was not for me. please don't take any of this personally, i just need to jot down my requisite rambles.
i was not a fan of the first-person writing style (lacked all the wit or emotion of my recent reads... vampire chronicles... sigh), i was not a fan of the "worldbuilding", i did not appreciate briggs' odd tendency to pepper her sentences with metaphors that sound jarring coming out of a rough-and-tumble mechanic's mouth, and i most of all did not like a single main character. there is no WAY that this book passes the bechdel test, first of all - mercy only hangs out or talks to men, which is excused by saying that she's such a sex magnet for werewolves that all the females hate her. huh?? and all of the men are entirely interchangeable! if briggs wanted me to remember who the characters are, she should've tried to give them interesting names. it's like she picked the top 10 male names and stuck with them. argh.
and then there's mercy herself, who i really, really wanted to like - but didn't. it's worth noting that a character doesn't have to be likeable to be compelling (i HATE daisy buchanan, but i find myself thinking about her often), but the problem with mercy is that there's nothing really distinctive about her. she's a different type of shapeshifter (coyote walker, which is a bit of weird appropriation nonsense in my opinion, but that's not really my space to talk about) and she's a female mechanic and she was raised by the most powerful werewolves in the world and she has two of the top five Alpha werewolves (yes, there's a list) thirsting after her, but mercy the CHARACTER is nowhere to be found. nothing about her screams "i have a personality", which is a necessity in first-person narration. also, this isn't even a slow burn romance, because mercy has no chemistry with anyone. ugh.
the plot moves quickly but didn't make much sense or compel me, but it's okay escapism. lots of fighting that blends together and many twists and turns that are a little hard to follow. i just could NOT deal with the writing, though, and i think that didn't help with my ability to pay attention. also everyone's a raging misogynist and it's really fucking annoying.
what i did like: stefan the scooby-doo obsessed vampire, the first time mercy shifts on-page and talks about her experiencing the world around her through coyote eyes, and the veterinarian-turned-werewolf (WHO ENDS UP FUCKING DYING. I WAS SO UPSET. the first compelling character in the book and he was treated like trash and killed. ugh). clearly this genre is not for me. sorry eli :(

Overall this was very enjoyable to listen to, though is no masterpiece. It's primarily a mystery that primarily involves werewolves with a few other supernatural creatures thrown in. The mystery in the book seemed typical of the genre to me, in that the reasoning and motivation of the villain was ridiculous. There is a hint of a love triangle, but just a hint.
This was such an amazing surprise. I ran across the library book of this a few years ago at a friend’s house and started reading it. Unfortunately, I didn’t write down the name or author and I’ve been kicking myself and looking for it ever since. Finally, I had had enough, so I broke down and scanned through every supernatural contemporary book page on Amazon, reading synopses when the cover looked familiar. Low and behold, I found it!
After so much effort I’m happy that this book was amazing. The characters have great personalities and I really love how different it is from other supernatural contemporary kind of stories. I wouldn’t classify this as a romance. It hints at it, but it isn’t the main focal point of this book, which is such a nice breath of fresh air. The lead character, Mercy, is a walker and, so far in the series, we know that she can shapeshift into a coyote and is immune to some magic. She’s intelligent and street smart, she thinks things through and she is very far from being a damsel in distress. She’s a badass and I love her. With any luck, I’ll be happy and binge reading the rest of this series soon.
