Not the spicy book I thought it would be BUT I’m happy I picked it up. It’s an easy read and yet written well enough you get lost in the scenes and invested in the characters. Just the right amount of suspense and adventure
Even though I JUST said I wasn't interested in the Lauren Hamilton, urban fantasy genre with all the werewolves and the vampires and all that...Well, okay, Patricia Briggs made it worth my while to stay with this one.
Mercy Thompson is an oddity among the magical creatures in the Pacific Northwest. Though raised among werewolves, she is a walker who shape-shifts at will into a coyote, a genetic gift of her here-and-gone-again Native father. She makes a living as a VW mechanic, keeping clear of the local pack of werewolves while making a community of sorts with her gremlin boss, a vampire client, and a friendly human cop.
Things get complicated when a newly-turned werewolf shows up on her doorstep. He doesn't know exactly what's happening, and Mercy knows he needs the guidance of a strong Alpha, so she brings the stranger to the local (and might we add, disturbingly attractive) Alpha.
Whatever my expectations, I found Mercy's adventures engaging. I like this world where the magical beings are only JUST becoming known to humankind. I enjoyed the presentation of the in-fighting and jockeying for position between and within packs of wolves and how it affects other non-pack canids. Mercy's dual nature is interesting to me, and I like her kick-butt integrity.
In all, a solid novel in the genre.

I remember reading this in 2007 and loving it. It was summer, I was devouring paranormal Romance novels, and all was good. now I want to go back and reread this because I explicitly remember I really enjoyed it.

Questa serie ha qualche pregio, ma a mio avviso anche parecchi difetti.
Partiamo dai pregi:
-Ambientazione originale, dove il popolo fatato ha deciso di rendere nota la propria esistenza agli umani, procedendo con gradi e mostrando prima le creature più innocue e dall'aspetto più accettabile. Il che apre molte strade per gli sviluppi futuri, oltre a porre il quesito dell'uscita allo scoperto anche alle altre creature: streghe, licantropi, vampiri.
-Protagonista NON investigatore. Altra rarità, lo ammetto. Se poi ci mettiamo che Mercy è un meccanico di periferia, che lavora su vecchie Wolkswagen, siamo a posto.
-Trama incentrata sui licantropi invece che sui vampiri, tanto per cambiare.
-Scrittura scorrevole, libro leggero che si legge velocemente e senza troppo fastidio.
Parlavo però anche di difetti:
-La struttura patriarcale dei licantropi, rigida, maschilista, fatta di dominazioni. Che ok, Mercy dichiara più volte antiquata e dice di opporvisi, ma poi spesso non solo la accetta ma sembra confermarne la validità.
-La (nemmeno lenta) formazione del classico harem intorno alla protagonista dell'urban fantasy, con due licantropi dominanti a contendersi la meccanica, e pronti a entrare in gioco anche un vampiro e un poliziotto umano. Vai di cliché.
-La trama è un po' troppo ingarbugliata e caotica, più che un piano genialissimo sembra il delirio di uno psicopatico.
-La protagonista in grado di trasformarsi in coyote è stata cresciuta direttamente dal capo di tutti i licantropi americani, le è stato spiegato che il coyote è visto male dai lupi in quanto predatore concorrente, che è meno forte dei lupi anche se può competere in quanto a velocità. Questo sembra essere il suo unico potere. Poi a fine libro scopriamo che in realtà i "walker" come lei, che erano peraltro creature soprannaturali originari di quelle zone a differenza di immigrati come vampiri e licantropi, avevano anche molti altri poteri. Che potevano essere utili ai licantropi.
Oltre alla banalità di questo escamotage, che vabbé, ci può stare, nessuno ha mai pensato non solo di dirglielo ma di addestrarla e usarla in caso di conflitto con le altre specie soprannaturali? Come potevano non saperlo i licantropi più antichi e potenti? E come potevano infischiarsene? Assurdo.
Visti pregi e difetti, e alla luce del romance soprannaturale che diventerà chiaramente sempre più centrale (come successo nella seconda metà del libro), non penso proseguirò la lettura della serie.

I loved the Graphic Audio version. It brings so much.
The different music were exceptionally well chosen. Mercy's voice was very on point. I was surprised by Adam's voice but I liked it. The sound effects for the magic and the actions (falling, grunting...) were greatly done as well.
I brought life to the story. The accents were done too much (I had some difficulties understanding Zee). I hope they tone it down for the next books.
I can't wait to listen to the next entries.

This was a solid book but very heavy on the masculinity. Like, there are maybe seven female characters and they all fail the Bechdel test. And there are a million male characters that are constantly like ALPHA MALE HERE MOVE OVER. So it gets pretty tiresome, but I do like Mercy and the overall story. This book doesn’t make me want to rush out and read the rest of the series immediately, but I’ll probably pick it up again at some point. I didn’t “really like” this book or love it, so it gets a solid 3 star rating because I liked it.
