This was a reread as I got one for Christmas and could t remember what had happened.
I really love the main character she isn’t some helpless idiot who has stumbled onto the supernatural she is a part of it from the start. She isn’t stupid either which I find a lot of main characters are.
The action is detailed but not too much and there is an actual plot that isn’t super obvious. Definitely one of my favourite supernatural series.

I immediately started binge reading the series after finishing this book, so I think that says something. An urban fantasy series with fae, werewolves, vampires, walkers, and more is just what I wanted. Sticking to one paranormal critter gets boring.

This was an interesting introduction into the world Mercy Thompson, where there are werewolves, shifters, vampires, and witches… just to name a few. Mercedes (Mercy) Thompson, someone who can shift into a coyote, gets stuck in the middle of werewolf politics trying to solve the murder of a teenage werewolf for whom she feels responsible.
Mercy is a refreshing character. She's a badass, but she’s not invincible. She knows when to dominate and when to take a step back. There’s a lot of action, and the stakes are high. But, there’s also a lot of world building, so it can feel like it drags a bit when we’re learning about how the world works. I’m looking forward to diving into the world to see what happens.
Great intro into this series. After reading number 12 I thought I’d relive it all again. :)

This was a very strong start to the Mercy Thompson series, which I'd been putting off reading for years. I'll admit I was a bit disgruntled when Patricia Briggs hopped off the traditional fantasy boat and went for urban fantasy--I enjoy urban fantasy and all, but I just loved her traditional fantasy that she'd been writing for years. Well, a friend finally convinced me to give them a shot and I loved this!
The cover makes it out to be some kind of cheesy romance, and thankfully it isn't. I think part of my reluctance to read it had been the covers on all of the books in the series--they seemed a little over-the-top. Well, despite the cover Mercy is a very strong person that's quite capable of holding her own. The fact Mercy can shift into a coyote just fits her character so well--she definitely has a bit of the trickster in her with her sassy attitude. I liked that it was, at the core, a story about werewolves, but not from the perspective of one--and, also, not from the perspective of a weaker human. It worked really well for the story.
Patirica Briggs has always been good with having some nice humor laced in her stories, and this is no exception. While the story isn't light-hearted, there's plenty of good, sarcastic moments to ease up the tension.
Definitely recommended to fans of urban fantasy!
