Read this a few years ago, still love reading the series - comfort read.
ACOTAR is a retelling of "Beauty and the Beast" with a twist. A great start into the romantasy genre.

The strongest point of this book is the imagery of the Spring Court, which informs the tone of the main part of the story. This makes it an enjoyable read even as the characters find their feet and
gradually stop being awful to each other
.
Unfortunately the Under the Mountain portion of the book ends up being a bit oppressively grim in contrast.

The plot draws a lot on classic stories, but not necessarily the most overdone ones, letting it still feel fresh and somewhat unpredictable. It’s definitely a good read, but doesn’t necessarily draw me in for more.

Standard fairy human relations type book. A little bit of a beauty and the beast feel. A bit too much a description of sexual relations. If you are into that sort of thing, it's not nasty in any way. The plot was engaging enough to keep me going through sixteen hours of audio

'All the warmth, all the sparkling joy, drained from me like blood down a drain.'

This sentence sums up so much of this book for me: needlessly wordy, dark, and not well crafted enough to warrant all the hype.

The plot was good, but it would have been so much better in the hands of a more competent writer who knew how to actually employ the flowery prose with which Maas clearly wanted to fill this overly long novel.

Also the spicy level and romance (The Main Things that are supposed to make this series notable) are underwhelming, to say the least. It certainly does not help matters that you *know* Tamlin was never intended to be End Game.

I will still read the next novel because that is where I have been told that this series actually starts to get good?? We will see...
