After months of swearing I would never read this book I caved. Because of the length of the series and how much I was constantly hearing about it I was not interested. I don’t know what made me pick it up after being so stubborn but I’m so happy I did. I read it and loved it.

The pacing was great and flowed nicely, the characters were fleshed out and had their motivations, and overall just an enjoyable read. It also holds up well as a stand alone and feels like a complete story even without the rest of the series. Sometimes I struggle with the hundreds of pages of world building at the beginning of fantasies but I didn’t feel that way at all.

- .5 because some there were some lines so cringey I couldn’t help but audibly scoff but it was a really great read.

A slow and not-that-steamy start to a series I have heard so much about. After abandoning it 100 pages in a few years ago, I decided to give it a second chance. This time I was less distracted by the writing quality and better able to come to care for the characters. I ended up quite enjoying it but I think it could have been half as long.
I was also very frustrated at the main character for not solving a riddle that would have cut out the whole final conflict of the book. For plot reasons, I knew she wouldn't get it until the last second, but the answer seemed so obvious to me.
I'm looking forward to continuing the series, especially to learning more about Rhysand, high lord of the night court. He did unforgivable things, and yet being one of those good bad guys who sometimes does the right thing has me intrigued and mad at myself for it.
I like the twist this story put on the tale of Beauty and the Beast, and I wonder if the rest of the series will bring in fairytale elements as well.

This was wattpad level trash and the sex scenes weren't even worth it. Also SJM ruined fae lore. Fae are supposed to be epic and whimsical, all she did was make them sus

Unfortunately not my cup of tea, but a solid and good YA fantasy with many elements I would surely have enjoyed age 12-17-ish. I'm glad I gave it a shot even when romance-driven plots aren't up my alley, but if it's up yours, you'll definitely want to read this and the rest of the series! It's romantic, it has faeries, it's hot, sexy, and doesn't shy away from blood, graphic depictions of violence, or clichés. And clichés are not a bad thing; there's a reason they work, time and time again.
