The start of this book was so very long. Once I got into the book, it was actually a pretty good read.
I don’t read fantasy too much so all the faerie stuff was very unusual for me, but I still enjoyed reading the book, although it felt quite silly to explain the plot to other people.

I didn’t think I’d enjoy this as much as I did. I expected to get good smut and a forgettable plot, thought it was anything but. The characters are hot and lovable, the worldbuilding is rather decent, and every chapter left me wanting more. For someone who likes kink, faeries, and fantasy, this was a perfect read.

This book was a rollercoaster of emotions and was very hard to put down by the end. Each character had something to offer and I could never quite decide which one was my favorite. The writing was beautiful, though sometimes a bit over-descriptive, and I could really get a sense of what Feyre was feeling.

Still, there were a couple of things that prevented this from being a 5-star review. While the male characters were amazing, a majority of the female characters, including Feyre, were kind of lacking in personality. Sure, Feyre has her badass moments. But her personality doesn’t revolve around much more that family, Tamlin, and painting. There was also very little diversity in all regards.

Another small thing that bothered me were the plot twists. There was foreshadowing, but so subtle that it’s like the author didn’t even want the reader to figure it out. A lot of the satisfaction I get from plot twists comes from those facepalm moments, or realizing that I was right all along. Yet the plot twists in ACOTAR just made me feel cheated.

Regardless, I did really enjoy this book and am looking forward to next ones. As I mentioned before, it’s not like I read this book for plot. The things that bothered me are insignificant compared to how hot the characters and writing are.

I thought this book was pretty mid. SJM is good at creating a fantastical world, but I find the romantic relationships in her books to be somewhat problematic. ACOTAR was no exception. While I liked the overall plot of the book, I could not get on board with the possessive and over-protective nature of the male love interests. I know there is a lot of hype around the series, so I’m willing to continue on to the next book in hopes that there is some character growth!

DID NOT FINISH: 20%

The writing feels sloppy:
~"he was merciless" but he spared you which is merciful
says her name twice in a convo, on the third time she says ~"so he remembered my name" but he already said it twice? Main character drives me crazy, feels so pathetic how she's
slave to her toxic family and continues to worry and help them even though her father said never return clearly so he can be "taken care of" long term
. Reading this just infuriated me and not in a passionate way, in an annoyed, "why would I waste time on this" way. A shame too because I loved Throne of Glass!
