I first read this book in May 2015, around the time it first came out. I then read the rest of the trilogy as those were releasing. Never read the novella and beyond.

I remember this installment being the worst (to me), and that still holds true in 2025. I just do not like Feyre in this story. She irritates the everloving piss out of me.

Compared to the final half, the first half was slow, but immediately got my attention and got me out of my years long book slump. I had a fantastic time with this and can’t wait to continue the series.

I considered giving this 5 stars, but since I have high hopes that I’ll enjoy other books in the series even more than this one, I’m giving it 4.5.

ACOTAR is slow going at first, but it does get more exciting by the end. I was hooked during the last half!!! I'd still say I enjoyed Throne of Glass more, though.

First I want to say that I LOVE this series. That being said, this is my least favorite book in the series. The story feels like it drags until around chapter 31 (63% of the way into the book). Nothing really happens before that chapter, just the characters getting to know each other more. The worldbuilding isn't amazing or anything either, it didn't really stand out to me like other fantasy books I've read. I understand that this is a romantasy series but I felt like even the romance was lacking.
For obvious reasons if you know what comes next.

The characters don't really stand out either. They just don't feel real to me. I will say, I love the banter between Lucien and Feyre. Their little conversations are always fun! Those bits of dialogue are the highlight of my reading experience for the first part.

After chapter 31 things are great. The last part of the book is engaging and suspenseful. There were certain points where I didn't want to put it down so I ended up reading longer then I expected. I think the pacing in this section was better, it didn't drag on like the earlier section.
I could be biased. I always knew I'd love Rhys. That man stole my heart from the moment he said, "There you are. I've been looking for you."

I enjoyed the set up to this series but this could’ve been a standalone as the entire story is neatly wrapped up by the end. I’m interested to see how the supporting characters are developed as this series progresses. The world-building is great and the allusions to Beauty and the Beast aren’t incredibly overt.
