My primary critiques:
  • the first third of the book was a moment by moment recap of a week at SNL...I mean TNO. It felt like it dragged on forever...
  • the chapters were super long. I didn't realize I appreciated shorter, reading-at-bedtime length chapters until confronted with "2hrs 23mins" remaining in this chapter
  • the super obvious replication of SNL, at times, felt cheesy. Halfway through I wondered if the author really had been a part of SNL.

All that being said, I ended up really liking it! I think if it didn't pivot when it did, I may have bailed and I am really glad I didn't.

Well for a book titled romantic comedy, this book was not particularly romantic, nor funny. It was a bit of a disappointment. It was more of a contemporary fiction novel about essentially an SNL writer with a little romance thrown in than a true rom-com.

I just love this book. Second time reading it and it's still just as good. All the comedy, behind the scenes of SNL, the anxiety of a new relationship, it was all so well written and enjoyable. Curtis forever.

This has been on my radar since its release, and I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did, but there is really something about Hollywood fanfiction that gets me, and Noah was a lovely leading man to read about.

Hm. Still sorting through my thoughts on this one. Quick take is that I listened to the first half on audiobook, which was a good choice, but then the second part came and the audio narration of their emails was just insufferable. So I picked up a print copy. Reading their emails in print is slightly better I guess, but the whole time I was thinking "Who the hell talks like this?". I felt like the author was kind of angling for a commentary-on-romance-as-a-genre vibe, which is new, I guess, but I simply don't think Sittenfeld is the kind of author who does that kind of meta commentary well.

That being said, the first portion made me laugh out loud at points. I'd pick up Sittenfeld again, but from the library.

I didn't love it when I started but I really enjoyed it as I continued reading. Without spoiling it, the caring scene really struck a chord with me and was such a great example of showing one's love for someone.

So fun!!!

Like a Liz Lemon story arc but not as funny. This was enjoyable enough but a huge disappointment from this writer. Ironically, if you have read any SNL alum memoirs (esp Molly Shannon or Tina Fey, both excellent) or watched 30 Rock, this will feel very familiar and unoriginal, yet I imagine that’s the target audience. The stakes are too low, the pacing is too slow, and the characters are less realistic and loveable than on 30 Rock. Sally’s stepdad and beagle are the highlights.
