So fun!!!

Like a Liz Lemon story arc but not as funny. This was enjoyable enough but a huge disappointment from this writer. Ironically, if you have read any SNL alum memoirs (esp Molly Shannon or Tina Fey, both excellent) or watched 30 Rock, this will feel very familiar and unoriginal, yet I imagine that’s the target audience. The stakes are too low, the pacing is too slow, and the characters are less realistic and loveable than on 30 Rock. Sally’s stepdad and beagle are the highlights.

I had high hopes for "Romantic Comedy," based on Sittenfeld's past books including "Prep and "American Wife." She's an intelligent, sophisticated writer and I expected her to explore the tropes of romantic comedy with a sharp and somewhat cynical eye. The book is divided roughlyl into thirds - the first describes a young woman who writes for an SNL-like TV show, and is fascinating in its depiction of a typical week in preparation to put on a weekly live comedy performance. The middle third is an email correspondence during the COVID pandemic between the writer and the show host/musical guest she was drawn to. In the final third, the two meet in real life, and that's the part that let me down because it's surprisingly cliche. Nevertheless, Sittenfeld is a great writer and I liked the book despite my own cynicism.

My cynical and semi-recently heartbroken self wants to rate it lower but I loved this. It was great learning more about how SNL works and Sally's humor is right up my alley.

What happens when a comedy writer and a musician date? A beautifully sexy connection

The book starts with the concept that famous women often date plain comedy writers (cough Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson), but the opposite never happens. While this concept prompts the novel, and does lead to some slightly annoying self-doubts, Sitenfield actually focuses on the romantic tension between two people who connect over humour, interests, and mutual encouragement. A slightly problematic concepts, leads into one of the most beautiful romances I have ever read.

The novel should be titled: Brains are sexy.

Super cute! And loved learning more behind the scenes of what SNL is like
