Honestly this was an excellently written book and would have gotten 4+ stars if not for the turn into the pandemic. I nearly dnf’d it when we arrived at July 2020 and were in full lockdown but I held out because the book was interesting and I was invested in the characters. That being said, I hate when Covid becomes a plot point simply because I want my fiction books to be fictional. Also the whole second chapter of reading email correspondences for 30+ pages nearly lost me but I do understand why that choice was made especially since it was set during the pandemic. Overall I’d be interested in reading other books by this author cuz I do like her writing style I just had a hard time with the last 2/3 of the book being set in a pandemic.

Ahh I want all romances to be this caliber. I loved Sally's voice and competence and trajectory.

All hail the NOT beautiful heroine!

Movie version, please (...except can we nix all the water bottles for reuseables?)

It was fine. A little too "white liberal feminist" for me though, honestly. The last 2 chapters had a lot happening very quickly after a very slow beginning. It had its cute moments in a very aspirationally-lovey-dovey, could-be-a-Tina-Fey-movie way.

Quick q for any psychologists out there... Why do I always picture Grant O'Brien as the quirky love interest?

i genuinely could not get through this book it was so hard. I wish i cared about any of the characters and i wish i could root for them to get together but genuinely unless you are the biggest SNL superfan i really don’t think it has much to offer. the main character’s entire motivating force is supposedly her 2014 brand of feminism but even that lackluster attempt at political literacy falls flat. i love a rom com and was excited for supposedly the epitome of the genre but am disappointed.

The first half was p good but the pandemic portions and general meandering quickly drained tension and urgency from the narrative and made it lacking in those terms. It almost felt like the first half was one tight narrative and the second half was fanfiction of it.
