I love a book that can make me laugh out loud, but can also make me cry. I was skeptical going in reading Beartown and this book, but it’s well worth the read, up until the very end. And even though it took me a long time to read it, I absolutely loved it.

I forgot how well this book pulls me. I’m laughing out loud, I’m tearing up…I can’t put it down. The buildup is wonderfully done. Backman writes in a way that I’m glued till I read the last word. His characters are more human than any book I’ve read. I hesitate reading The Winners only cuz I think I know where it’s heading and I don’t want it to any. I don’t want anything to end. Specially because I know Backman will have me glued and heartbroken in no time.

The second title of the Beartown triology left me with mixed feelings. While Backman is able to make me deeply care about the fictional people of Beartown, the writing otherwise left me rather bored because it felt repetitive at many times. I think the book could have been shorter and still telling this emotional story, and even though I have been bored at some times, I am looking forward to reading the last book.

this book was painful to get through. the first part of the series was SO GOOD, so i obviously had really high expectations going in. but this just fell so short. i really wanted to throw in the towel, but decided to keep going unless it picked up... and it never did. until the last pages, and at that point i was just thinking 'really?! i read all of this for the book to end like that?!' - some books are just better off without the sequels.
