I had hoped that I would come to love this book the way I have come to love Lola, Sad Boy, MK, Monkey, Dr. Big Butt, Francois, Christian Dior, Georgie, Feral Gerald and all the cats whose lives were improved by Courtney Gustafson. The book is a reflection of the love and care she puts into her rescue work. It resonated with me for how deeply one can feel empathy, as almost a kind of pain. That pain can also coexist with other pains of witnessing, helping and surviving.
Gustafson's writing has an important message: that most of us are animals abandoned by a system that is meant to care for us. One way to survive this abandonment is to choose each other everyday, be it human or animal. That is the meaning of community.
