I'm surprised this was longlisted for the WP2024; whilst Nimmo's tale is interesting this felt like rather mediocre historical fiction. I found Violet's voice to be inconsistent and many characters underdeveloped. Foster's writing style did not mesh well with my own tastes as it was rather plain. I shed tears in the last few pages, however I feel this was more due to the

grooming Christian endured (and the knowledge that this happens in reality)

rather than a relationship to the characters themselves.
