WHAT IN THE NAME OF GOD IS THAT ENDING, AUTHORS? AND I DON’T HAVE BOOK TWO? WHAT?!??
Also does a beautiful job of making all those weird coincidences we allow because book actually plot relevant and horrifying later.

I absolutely LOVED "These Broken Stars" so when I saw this by the same authors, I bought it. It was one of those sales across the e-book lists, so I got it for $1. This didn't grab me (and stomp on my heart) like Stars, but I liked it. Very "Indiana Jones" there with ancient temples and traps and puzzles.
This is set in an uncertain future, with Earth struggling to survive - one ship of people was sent off to attempt a colonization of another habitable planet, but was lost (although ... hmmm, no spoilers, but could they be?). Then Gaia was discovered, not quite habitable (oxygen must be supplemented, no real life there), but ancient ruins from an alien "Undying" race, with amazing technology. Can this save the Earth, or doom it?
Some parts predictable, one twist I hadn't expected ... cliffhanger ending. I'm not dying for the next book, but it does come out soon and I likely will be following up to see what happens.

**so i'm just going to copy and paste the review i had to write for mugglenet here (omg it has good grammar AND coherent spelling??? shocking.) also i agree a lot with what my love elise said. i tried not to repeat what she said but i felt, like, the exact same asjlsdf i will say though like i enjoyed these broken stars so much because the characters from the beginning were so strong. they were so stubbornly themselves and here there was so much focus on the world, which was cool and all, but at the end i was like, oh that's over then. it was good, though: i'd still say 3.5.**
I’m a huge fan of sci-fi books and especially Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner, as I’ve read Illuminae – although written with a different co-author, Jay Kristoff – and from the Starbound trilogy, These Broken Stars and This Night So Dark. I enjoyed These Broken Stars, but it has been over 2 years and obviously I didn’t feel compelled enough to read the other two in the trilogy. I did read the short prequel, and I enjoyed the characters but it fell somewhat flat and I ultimately decided to read other books. That being said, I’m a huge fan of Illuminae and Gemina, so I was hoping for this book to decide my feelings about Amie Kaufman. I’ve come to the conclusion that I enjoy the way she handles the sci-fi genre immensely, but the characters can be a hit-or-miss.
This book, to me, is simply entertaining. It has good potential and is already being turned into a film, which is not surprising. It was action-paced and did feel like a space adventure movie. I would be fine with a space adventure movie that doesn’t let me not get attached to the characters – it’s a movie, there’s no way we can see inside the characters minds and spend time with their thoughts. I would, however, expect it from a book when I read about 344 pages about these two characters. They just weren’t that captivating to me. However, the settings and the plot were incredible. I could not put this book down. If you’re looking for an action-based book to read in one setting, I’d recommend this for sure.
I will say that it’s a success in terms of a co-authored book, because they write almost seamlessly and I couldn’t tell who was writing who. And one thing I did like about the characters was their dynamic with each other. From the first time they come across each other, they make split judgements and over the course of the book, develop and change their opinions. I wish their relationship with each other wasn’t the main thing defining their characters, though. I enjoyed the fact that both our main characters were interested in the academic and strategic paths; it was interesting to see people who have an interest in space for the sake of understanding it approached these dangerous situations.
I enjoyed it, but it is definitely not my favorite sci-fi or even Amie Kaufman book. I would say that the writing has much improved from These Broken Stars, which I enjoyed but was a bit lacking on the worldbuilding. They made up for that in this. I would like to find some of the emotional attachment I felt for those characters in Unearthed‘s sequel. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy sci-fi and fast-paced books, in the likes of Warcross by Marie Lu or The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancey.

The first half of the book dragged for me, second half was more 4 stars for me and that ending! Will be picking up the sequel.
“Unearthed” is the first in a duology co-written by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. “Unearthed” follows two main characters named, Jules Addison and Amelia Radcliffe. These two meet on the planet Gaia, after Earth intercepts a message from a long-extinct alien race called ‘The Undying’ who had advanced technology that has the potential to undo the environmental damage to the Earth. Both characters have different reason’s for being on Gaia, Jules Addison is there to study “The Undying’s” culture while Amelia Radcliffe is there to scavenge for treasures.
I enjoyed the novel, which had elements of Indiana Jones and Lara Croft, which I enjoy, but unlike Indiana Jones and Lara Croft, “Unearthed” was not as entertaining and as exciting as these adventurous movies. I gave the novel a 3/5 Stars.

Unearthed is the kind of story you start, and you proceed to ignore anything and everything unitl you finish.
Then you yell into the void. At everyone. So they can read it too.
When I first discovered these two authors through their Starbound trilogy, I quickly fell in love with their storytelling. Unearthed brought it to a whole new level. Their writing is engaging and action-packed, yet heartfelt. At times humourous in the face of danger, and near-always I-CAN'T-PUT-THIS-DOWN addictive.
Amelia and Jules, our two leads in this novel, are two brave teens who accidentally bump into each other on another planet and set off not fully intending to help each other out. They're both looking out for their own interests. Amelia only wants to save her sister, and Jules is trying his damnedest to save Earth.
Pitched as Indianna Jones meets Lara Croft in Space, Unearthed is a charming, clever, and at times terrifying fight for survival on an alien planet that makes a little too much sense.
Please do yourself a favour and pick it up.

Initial Impressions 1/9/18 + full review posted to The Book Addict's Guide 1/10/18: Somewhere right around 4.5 stars... I was listening to the audiobook while making candles so my attention tended to drift, taking away some of the focus, but I think if I had full attention, it would have been even more stellar!
First, let me say... I was NOT ready for that ending! I wasn't paying attention to how much was left in the audiobook and I was so surprised and shocked and... well, you should have heard the string of curses I shouted in my car when I found out that was how this book ended! It's been a long time since I've had such a reaction to a book so that was pretty awesome, actually.
The ending definitely launched some more feelings that has me wanting to rate this closer to 4.5 stars than 4, but there were also parts that I just didn't click with as much. I DO think that's because of my lack of focus, though, so I can't fault the book for that.
I loved both Jules and Mia (Mia more) and I liked how the girl was the tough one and the guy was the academic. I didn't quiiiite pick up on their chemistry but I didn't not feel it either (if that makes any sense at all). I wasn't super shipping them but I enjoyed their connection, and you know I like anything where there's banter or a sort of hate-to-love concept, so that worked for me!
The world-building was awesome. I don't always do aliens (which is also why I didn't read THESE BROKEN STARS, which apparently now I have to) but certain authors are totally nailing that and making me enjoy things that I didn't think I liked. The concept behind this book was super interesting and I loved how things are constantly discovered and how everything evolves throughout the book. I'm sure a lot of people saw what was coming but again, that's kind of the glory of listening to audiobooks while I work -- I'm listening to the story but I'm not thinking ahead because my brain is already multi-tasking, so I'm often super surprised by plot twists and crazy developments, and UNEARTHED? You totally got me. I had chills. I shouted! I was stunned. There were a lot of super awesome moments in this book that had me reacting which aside from rage at "bad" things in books, I haven't done in a long time.
This is an awesome adventure book. It's pitched as Indiana Jones meets Lara Croft in space. I don't know Lara Croft but Indiana Jones is definitely a good comparison. It's part treasure-hunting, a lot of history, and a whole lot of adventure, and I really enjoyed the pacing from start to finish. There were a couple of slow-ish spots right after the beginning when things are getting set up, but I connected to the characters and this world pretty quickly.
I really enjoyed this book and I'm SO happy to have found a book that evoked feelings from me that wasn't a re-read, and feelings that weren't just rage. For that alone, it deserves quite a bit of praise because I've had a hard time finding a book that does that to me, for really almost a year now (I had very few 4.5 - 5 star reads last year) and DUUUUDE do I really have to wait for the next book?!? UGHHH. I need it now. I need it yesterday. I need it before I had even finished this one.
